Friday, March 13th, What's on Your Patriot Woodworker Agenda?

Featured Replies

I hope you are not one of the ones superstitious about Friday the 13th and go ahead and get some work started or done in your shop. We are still having a week long rain event here and I am feeling like I live in the rain forest right about now. I know sometime this summer I will be wising for a bit of rain so I am trying really hard not to complain too much.

So I finished up all but one of my cutting boards from last week and weekend.

I have one that had a small place on the edge so I filled it with epoxy. It should be ready to sand off and put the mineral oil on it now and have it ready to go with the others.

I will also be working on the base to a table this weekend made from some old white oak beams I finally found.

They are 4"x6" and a little over 12' long. They have been dried so I am ready to go with this. Just need to run them through the equipment and start assembly.

I also have a few small pieces cut to make some smaller edge grain cutting boards and one more end grain board.

So that should give me plenty to do this weekend and hey "it's a my birthday!" on Saturday.

What are you other TPW woodworkers doing this weekend? You know that we here at TPW love to see the projects you have and are working on so please share them with us. No project is too big or too small, we love to see them all.

I'll be checking to see what you are working on, so come on and post those projects and pictures.

John - looks like you will be all set for a couple of weeks, eh?

This is our first show of the year - packed the truck yesterday, headed out this morning with the travel trailer in RAIN and 46 degrees ! ! ! ! - YUCK - Weather guy says 80% chance of rain tomorrow morning (set up starts at 6AM) and slowly dying off with temps starting at 44F and rising to 70F - at least Sunday is scheduled to be warm and sunny.

Monday we are headed for Warner Robins AFB and spend the day at the Air Force Air Museum - haven't been there for 30 years - me thinks there may be a few changes.

Later guys

we are off on a road trip to deliver some product to an art gallery. should be back in time to spend an afternoon in the shop trying out the easy-wood tools.

I've been helping out my departed friend Ollie's widow Darlene.

She lost the brakes on her 2008 Nissan Pathfinder.

3 rotors, one caliper, and pads all around. About $320.00 for parts.

The vehicle will also need an oil pan, but it will have to wait until next month.

I patched it with high temp RTV silicone, and hope it holds until she can afford a new oil pan.

On a brighter note, it made it to 63° here today!

I'll be going to a Corned Beef, & Cabbage dinner Saturday evening.

It's a yearly event  that a friend takes me out to celebrate my St. Patrick's Day Birthday!

No woodworking for me but I did have some automotive work to do. My wife's front breaks started to squeal yesterday so I eyeballed them through the rims and saw that they were toast. So I dropped her off at work this morning and then swung by the auto parts store and picked up both front and rear pads. Fortunately her brakes are easy to do as the hardest thing to do is to jack up the car and take off the wheels. So now her car has new brakes and she is happy.

Happy B-Day John!!!

As for me, Finally got a flat glueup on the chess board. Making the border banding strips now.

An early Happy Birthday to my good friend, other wife (for you Allen), and fellow admin John Moody.  Only one more year John.  I'm not superstitous because Friday the 13th is my lucky day.  I seperated from the Air Force on Fridy, July 13, 1973.  As for my projects, I'm moving from an outhouse project to building two dressers for my wife's cousin so I may get started on it tomorrow.  I though retired guys were supposed to lay around and watch Oprah.

Ron,

My lucky day too!

Oprah?

Man, that's a nice stack of boards, John. And I am so envious of those oak beams.

Happy B-day, too.

Nice of you to help the lady, Larry. She must have been limping a while if all that was bad. Hope the pan patch holds. And a Happy B-day to you, too. Buskirk? Irish?

Sounds like brake jobs are the job of the day, Allen. But momma's happy and most of all, safe.

Ron, there's never enough time in the day to do all the nothing, you want.  Wife asked me what I was going to do today, I said, "nothing". She said "you did that yesterday." I said " I didn't get finished."

Actually, as for me, CLEAN! Rearrange.Toss.

Had to actually WORK the last two nights!   Back off of Med Leave...for three weeks.   Then the fun starts

Ear surgery on right ear to remove the innards.  Mastoidectomy

Three weeks to try to get back to "normal" with the balance thingy

Three weeks of vacation days to "burn off"

May 15.....RETIRED.

Final day at work LOOKS like Apr 3 2015.  I will wheel the roll-around tool box out the door, and .......whatever comes up

MIGHT get that little table done enough to add a finish.....maybe..

Fred,

At one time the last name was VanBuskirk.

I'm a mutt, German, Irish, English, Dutch, Norwegian, & Blackfoot Indian.

And I'm also still working on nothing!

Hoping to finish THIS thing this weekend.....I hope..

The drawer front is just sitting there,  needs the rest of the parts made...

IF the ear will let me...

Hi guys and ladies, late to the party again I am :)

This weekend i have been working on a pepper grinder(mill) that I have been wanting to get done. I'll show some updated pictures later after the camera charges up.

It's one of the smaller ones from Craft Supplies USA. A bit less expensive than some I have seen which is good but not sure about the quality yet since it's the first one I bought, but it has a 4 of 5 star rating.

The other thing that I am doing and have been for a few days, is learning how to make cast nets. My grandmother made them for many many years but never taught me how (she didn't have the patience), and I have ALWAYS wanted to learn how, so I have been learning how to do that while the finish is drying on the pepper mill. I hate sitting around doing nothing when i could be doing something fun. ;)

I'll get some pictures of that later too.

Have a great week everyone

Make a little progress Saturday.

I got the Oak Beams cut to size for the bottom and top supports for the table.

post-3498-0-15562600-1426522399.jpg

I ran them across the new 8" jointer and wow that was so nice. Got a face flat and then got the 90 degree face flat. Took them to the planer and did the opposite faces there.

Over to the table saw and cut the half lap joints in the center.

post-3498-0-68996300-1426522508.jpg

I'll round off the fronts of the pieces and then cut the 45 degree supports to the center post.

So made some progress, just got to keep it going.

Hi guys and ladies

I wanted to update my earlier post because I had mentioned there that in addition to my woodturning, that i was starting to make cast nets now,so here is what I have so far.

006.jpg

It's a cast net, or the start of one.

My grandmother made nets most of her life for mullet fishing, and I always wanted to learn how to do it, so it was one of the things I had on my bucket list I guess you could say.

Seeing as it is my very first one, I will probably never try selling it, but instead, it will probably wind up on my wall, but if I ever move back to the coast, I will have a net I can actually use! :)

I know that a lot of these nets these days are more than 8 ft long, but most of them used to be only 4 to 8 ft long. This one will probably be in the 3 to 4 ft range since it will be a wall mount :)

Anyway, thanks for reading and have a great week. I am still working on the pepper grinder too, but I hope to finish that today :)
