USA Sand Paper

Featured Replies

I am in the process of stocking up my shop back up after months of inactivity, and that inactivity began with an understocked workshop! I ordered 5 boxes of USA Sand Paper at about 75 bucks total including shipping, each box has 50 disks. You can view their page at Online Industrial Supply.

So far so good, great price, and cheap shipping! I got a chance to try the disks out last weekend on my rocker seat and these disks rock! Great lasting time, and thick paper for durability. Just a heads up for yall, they still have a sale going on for their Platinum paper if you need a great disk, at a great price.

John, which grits do you stock up with?

  • Author

80,150,220,320,400 John

Those are my main grits, I do have 60 that is not used often but it's in there just case.

The grits I use are specific to my finishing style which is wipe on finishes. I like to sand through the grits as noted above, and buff the bare wood with a 1000 Abralon pad as the last step before the finish is applied, that gives the wood a nice shiny sheen, then it's ready for my 3 part wipe on varnish, oil, thinner, in 3 equal parts.

If I am going to use a more traditional finish applied by spray or brushed on I'll sand to 150 before the first coat of finish, then 220 between coats, just before the last coat I'll sand it out at 320, after the finish has cured I'll rub it out with a brown bag soaked in mineral spirits, then wax. But that's just me!

Pretty much the same that I try to keep also John.

And like you, if I am spraying I will sand to 120, then 220 between coats and wait on it to cure and rub out and wax.

Those are tried and true methods.

Thanks John, will have to look into this. I have been using 3M but if these work that good and I can save money I'm all for it.

You bet Wayne!

How does it hold up?

I've used paper on my lathe that sheds grit all over the place forcing me to cover the ways before sanding.

So far well Cliff, I have only had a chance to use the 80 grit. It sands as expected, no ground breaking new technology here, the paper does what it is supposed to do, and the paper last long without flaking or burning. One thing I noticed is it does not gum up as easily as other brands I have used, leaving the grits wide open to do their job. I'll purchase again from USA.

Thanks for the tips, guys.  Will look into both.  Getting tired of the "big box store" brands.
