December 27, 201411 yr A while back I completed a refinish job on an old chair, you can find that at For my efforts I received in trade a wonderful set of wood carving chisels from the woman I did the job for, the chisels belonged to her Dad, who owned the chair, and the chisels were then handed down to her brother, along with the chair, her brother passed away this time last year from cancer, and she wanted me to have these chisels as she knew I'd appreciate them. I don't know how old they are, the men in her family were all carvers all the way back to the old country days, some are older, and some perhaps a tad more recent, I just took a shot of the two dozen she handed to me, she told me she pulled some out that she wanted to keep for memories. I love these old chisels. The original tool roll is with them as well. It's heavy cotton, and kind of looks like the old material that mattresses in the old days were upholstered with.
December 31, 201411 yr Author I need to go through them and clean them up some, they are still sharp as the dickens which shows me they were being used up to the end. But some air and moisture had gotten to them so they have some slight oxidation on them. But they are most certainly users.
January 3, 201511 yr invest in a great set of stones to sharpen them with. And with that set I'd recommend getting a veritas sharpener and the stones from them too. I sharpened my marples set that way and saved me TONS of time sharpening by hand. There is a learning curve to sharpening carving chisels, especially the gouges.

This is going to be a first for me for sure. A whole new world awaits!
