November 16, 201411 yr Is there a comparison video on what carbide bit would be used to replace the old type tool? I mean instead of using a bowl gouge, you would use which carbide one? And so on with each old type. Looks like to me that it may be difficult to convert to carbide Is it?
November 16, 201411 yr Ron, In my opinion, carbide tips can replace some of the conventional type tools. Scrapers come to mind as the tool that carbide replaces most easily. When it comes to gouges, I think the conventional gouge is still the best especially for roughing and most spindle work. Bowl gouges on the other hand are very aggressive and carbide bits seem to be easier to use for this application. I haven't found anything that makes a skew chisel easier to use- other than more and more practice.
