October 11, 201411 yr Yesterday Beth and I spent the day yard scaling for about 60 miles. It was the weekend for the Meriwether Lewis weekend in Hohenwald, TN. We stopped at this one location and there were about 50 tents setup. I was walking by a table and something on the table yelled my name. This really nice looking wood Linseed Oil Container. . This should look nice in the shop
October 11, 201411 yr I wonder if, when that was actually full of linseed oil, if it there was a constant sheen of oil seen from the outside? Or leaching of the oil?
October 11, 201411 yr Author It has what looks like a tin lining. Couldn't see that yesterday day it was raining do hard. I have tried to find W. H. Beard paint co. but I have not found them yet. I am just guessing it was late 1800's to very early 1900's. The lady I got it from said she purchased it on Arkansas.
October 12, 201411 yr Cool! Looks like it was made from white oak. White oak has always been the default barrel material for all wet ( water tight) cooperage. This is both wet and white (straight sided) cooperage. Usually white cooperage wasn't meant for shipping because the bent stave barrel was simply tougher in service. Slack cooperage could use pretty much any strong material because it wasn't meant for water tightness.
