Jim Harvey Posted June 26, 2014 Report Posted June 26, 2014 (edited) Roy Underhill has a serious WF Barnes jones and uses this mortiser in one of the "Woodwrights Shop" episodes. see http://video.pbs.org/video/2263882759/ And another one I can't find. He said the machine was difficult to set up. Edited September 8, 2019 by Larry Buskirk Quote
John Moody Posted September 29, 2014 Author Report Posted September 29, 2014 Some time back I post some pictures of a W.F. & J. Barnes Foot Powered Mortising machine I got. It all worked but I didn't have any chisels for it. I have been keeping my eyes out for some chisels and so far had come up dry. Sunday my wife and I rode to Nashville to the monthly flea market. I walked up to this booth that had lots of rusty tools. I pulled up a picture of what the chisel for my Barnes Mortisier looked like and ask if he knew if in any of the boxes he had one like that. He said wait a minutes, went to one of the boxes under the table and pulled out this rusty bit. It looked like what I needed but I had not idea if it was right or not. It had so much rust on it I could see any name or anything. He said $5.00 and it's yours so I pulled out the money and paid him. I couldn't wait when I got home to clean it up so I am sorry but you don't get to see it rusty. I put it in the machine and sure enough it fit. Wow, I was so happy it fit. So I looked on the chisel and saw a name. L. Houston and the sizd 5/16. I looked it up and Levi Houston had a couple of patents for mortising machines, the latest in 1892, the year he passed away. Here is a side view of the L. Houston Chisel. and here is the view of the Chisel showing the three sides for the hollow mortising. I will still keep my eyes open for a Barnes so it will go with the machine, but I love having this one so I can at least show the machine with a chisel mounted in it. The Chisel is quite dull as you can imagine so as quick as I can I will get it sharp and show you all how it works. One of the other things interesting while I was there was this neat of Barnes Drill Press. I saw it and then saw the tag which said it was SOLD. I ask the guy if he minded if I ask what he got for it. He told me 600.00 and 100.00 to deliver it. I know I don't need it and have no idea where I would have put it but it would have looked really good with the mortising machine. He I really love this Patriot Picking! Quote
lew Posted September 29, 2014 Report Posted September 29, 2014 That's cool, John! I wonder how the "corners" got rounded over (in the second picture)? Quote
John Moody Posted September 29, 2014 Author Report Posted September 29, 2014 If I were guessing, I would say someone was hitting on it to get it out of the machine. It has a taper similar to a Morse Taper on a Lathe. Quote
Larry Buskirk Posted September 8, 2019 Report Posted September 8, 2019 "Back From The Archives" @John Moody, Hope you don't mind, I merged your later post about finding the chisel with the original post. Gunny and HARO50 2 Quote
Kevin Beitz Posted September 29, 2019 Report Posted September 29, 2019 $1000.00 for a set... Wow... You say he's a collector. I would find out what he collects. Trading always worth more than money... Quote
John Morris Posted March 28, 2022 Report Posted March 28, 2022 @John Moody, I was just contacted by a fellow saying he has a full set of the chisels, do you need them? Quote I saw in a forum from a few years back where someone was looking for Barnes mortise chisels for the foot powered mortiser. I have a set if there would be any interest in them from anyone in your group? I also have some old hand chisels. Larry Buskirk, Grandpadave52, Cal and 1 other 4 Quote
Djc Posted May 1 Report Posted May 1 Dan here. I have in my possession a wf&j Barnes co. Pedal former/shaper,mortise and a piece that I can't identify. Who can I send a picture to to help me know what it's for? My mortise machine however has a wooden foot lever and two springs all original. Quote

Djc Posted May 3 Report Posted May 3 Thanx grandpadave52 I look forward to see all the fine craftsmanship on top of what I've already seen. I appreciate and know all about a project completed and the sense of accomplishment knowing we have dedicated time and effort for our unique skills. I'm pushing my grandsons to get off the video games and use their hands and imagination in the workshop. Thanx again! Will send pics of my old machines. Grandpadave52 1 Quote
