April 22, 201115 yr Okay Larry, I need you to put the cad program to work and help me out.  I want to put in a air filtration unit in my shop. My son brought this unit home for me to use so I need a cabinet designed to put on the ceiling and filter the air in my shop.  How about it are you up to helping me out with this one??  Here is the unit and I will get you the dimensions tonight.  So have any of your got your own filtration system, show me what you are using.  Thanks  Â
April 22, 201115 yr Nice John. That should move some air. Warn people with a hair piece, they may loose it if they get near that fan. Here's a link to the one I built. http://lumberjocks.com/projects/23971
April 22, 201115 yr Author Thanks, John, I knew someone on here had done this, just couldn't remember who. I have bookmarked that page. Thanks so much.
April 22, 201115 yr  John, I have a similar setup. Different configuration, mine are over under.  As you can some dust gets inside the box but I got a say I've never in the 10 years they have been up (I have 4 of these in the shop) I've never cleaned the inside.
April 22, 201115 yr Yes just one filter. Both fan units are in the same box with one filter on the back. John Moody said: That's cool Rich. Do you just have the one filter on it?
April 22, 201115 yr Run 6 inch tubes off the right and left side and run them straight to the outside. Put a gate closer at each line going out to prevent cold air from coming in.
April 23, 201115 yr John.. Some years ago, Penn State offered their overhead dust collector in kit form. It also came with some aweful plans to build the box. So bad, I designed my own.Yes, I will do that for you but the exact dimensions of all the stuff and it'sxact location within the box is pretty important.MDF is too heavy for a ceiliing mounted unit.  I made mine from 1/2" BCX plywood, glued and screwed together, then painted it white. I hung if from the ceiling using hooks and chains. Be sure to find the floor joists! Yours will be heavy! And I think it's way too big. How many square feet do you have in your shop?Larry
April 23, 201115 yr Author The shop is 24 x 32. I will have to flush mount it to the ceiling. I just got home from a long day so I'll get you the dimensions in the morning. That unit you see is actually pretty light. Thanks I look forward to the plans. April 23, 201115 yr My shop is 28 x 48 with a 12 ft ceiling. I have 4 two 2 fan units. I have never felt I had too much, but then what do I know, I'm not very technical person.
April 24, 201115 yr Author Okay well here are the measurement. Let me know if you need more.  It is 31 1/8" wide.  It is 11 1/2" high.  And it is 12" deep.  So let me know if you need any other measurements.  And Thanks for taking on this project for me.   Larry Jenkins said: John..  Some years ago, Penn State offered their overhead dust collector in kit form. It also came with some aweful plans to build the box. So bad, I designed my own. April 24, 201115 yr John..Knowing the width, length and depth are fine, but how will the components be placed/secured in what is really a simple box with a detachable back? Removeable pre-filter screen on the front? Not clear yet, but I'm old..Larry
April 24, 201115 yr Author I'll make some type of bracket to mount it in the correct position. I think we need to have intake and out flow filters, what do you think. Heck I hope I get old.... Larry Jenkins said:John..Knowing the width, length and depth are fine, but how will the components be placed/secured in what is really a simple box with a detachable back? Removeable pre-filter screen on the front? Not clear yet, but I'm old..Larry
April 24, 201115 yr John..Most shop filter systems have a pre-filter that can be removed and blown out. Inside, there is usually a three or four section 'bag filter." Looks like a fork. Then there's an outlet grill just behind the squirrel cage fans.I think what I will do is design a conceptual box showing how it shuold be made to carry the vertical loads.I'll post it when I get it done. Give me a few days.Larry
April 24, 201115 yr Author I'm in no rush Larry. I appreciate your taking this on and right now I have several projects on the table so when you can will be fine. Take your time.
April 25, 201115 yr John..Plan views are done. The design will be conceptual as I said earlier. It will show how constructing the box takes advantage of the side members carrying the load rather than putting tension in vertically mounted screws.Tomorrow, I'll draw up an isometric view showing the rabbett details.  I'll try and post your design sometime tomorrow night if I get it done. Thanks for allowing me to exercise my old mind. Just love design work..Larry
April 25, 201115 yr Author Looking forward to seeing it, but as I said I am in no rush. I appreciate your putting your talent and skill to work.Â
April 25, 201115 yr Isometric view is done. Just have to add the text. I'll post it tomorrow for sure. The basic concept design will just show the structural aspects of what you want. Actual Height, width, depth and screw sizes and lengths will have to be figured out by you. The availability of a stock size pre-filter may alter the box sizes.Larry
