August 17, 201114 yr Author Well today I was able to get primer on the stand, motor, hand wheel, and capacitor covers.   I did realize that there is two more parts, the door for the motor access on the stand and the motor mount.
August 18, 201114 yr Author Thank you Shane. Im hoping it looks as good as yours.Shane Whitlock said:Looking great!!!
August 19, 201114 yr Author I just finished removing the paint from the inside of the door to the lathe stand. I kept the door just for color matching and now that I have it, there's not a reason to keep it. Here's before: And here's after: I know there is some residue in the corners but it's thundering here and I just don't want to be a antenna.Â
August 20, 201114 yr Doug,  I have enjoyed following your incredibly thorough restoration. Also, congrats on getting such a nice lathe at such a great price.  Last Friday I was able to pick up the Delta 12" Deluxe Heavy Duty lathe (model 46-400) I won from a local school district auction. Mine is from 1961. I think it is mostly sound, but having come from a high school shop, there are a few instances of tool abuse that will need to be addressed. I am hoping that there are enough similarities between our two machines that I can learn from your example as I get into restoring mine. The pics are not great, but you will at least be able to tell what model I am talking about.    Andy
August 20, 201114 yr Author Andy,Mine was originally part of the school system also. Do you have the parts list for you lathe. If not, here is a link to the manual.http://vintagemachinery.org/mfgindex/detail.aspx?id=1141&tab=3If there is anything I can do to help please don't hesitate to get in touch with me.Congrats, I hope to follow your restoration and thank you for your comments.DougÂ
August 20, 201114 yr Author Things are turning up green here in Ohio.  I started to practice on the smaller parts before I did the bed or the stand. I wanted to get a feel for the paint first.Â
August 20, 201114 yr Author Ok I just couldn't wait for tomorrow to see at least one of the parts without tape. The bearing housing L122 just had to be the one I removed the tape from. I want to do something as I begin the process of rebuilding the lathe. I want to keep a photo diary of each part that has been polished and/or painted. I won't post them all here but I want to capture each part now as the restoration becomes a working machine.
August 21, 201114 yr I am liking what I see Doug. Nice job and good idea on keeping the photo gallery as you put it together. That will be a nice piece of machine history to keep with it. John MoodyJohn Moody Woodworkshttp://www.johnmoodywoodworks.com
August 21, 201114 yr Author I took out 2 of the new bearings and put them into the bearing housing. I wanted to see what it looked like. That works out that now 3 bearings are where they are supposed to end up. The other was the spindle bearing. It had to be pressed on (tight fit).
August 21, 201114 yr Author Now its time to rebuild the motor. On the way out I ran across a common sight where I live. 4 does and 3 babies in our front yard. The bucks were in the woods.  Anyway I rebuilt the motor with the intention to put it in a safe place until the paint hardens.Â
August 21, 201114 yr Author Well the forcast was for no rain after 12:00 noon. Here its 1:49 and I had to scramble to cover the lathe bed and get the compressor under cover. An to think I trusted that weatherman!Â
August 21, 201114 yr Nice work Doug........I would love to wake up seeing that in the morning. Good thing dad wasnt with mom and babies. My 7mm rem mag is itching to get out My job is to give my kids things to discuss with their therapist
August 22, 201114 yr What a project!  That is a beauty!  Looking forward to seeing the finished project. SQ It it can't be fixed with glue and sawdust - it's not worth fixing.
August 22, 201114 yr Author Thanks SQ I want it to be the best I can do. This is my first restoration. I normally do computer work. SQ said:What a project!  That is a beauty!  Looking forward to seeing the finished project. SQ It it can't be fixed with glue and sawdust - it's not worth fixing.
August 22, 201114 yr Author Just make sure to yell duck so I can get out of the way. Couple years back I took out one of the largest Does in the area. Dressed out she weighed 135 lbs.Ken Rasmussen said:Nice work Doug........I would love to wake up seeing that in the morning.
