January 30, 201214 yr Okay Scrollers, Tell me about the Delta 20" Heavy Duty Scroll Saw that Woodcraft has on sale right now. I am looking for a scroll saw and this looks interesting. And it is on sale and LOML likes it when I save money. John Moody John Moody Woodworkshttp://www.johnmoodywoodworks.com
January 30, 201214 yr Wish I had one to give you a review. Mine is a 20 YO Delta 16" It's just OK. I've never needed an other 4". I've used a Hegner and an Excaliber. If $$ were no object (and it definitely is!) I'd get a Hegner. But the Excaliber is really nice, too. And cheaper. The sale price on the Delta from Woodcraft is darned good, though. I think the Delta and the Dewalt are essentially the same tool. Gene'The true soldier fights not because he hates what is in front of him, but because he loves what is behind him.' G. K. Chesterton
January 30, 201214 yr John I was wondering the same thing. I have a SAKURA 14". It's a step up from some of the cheaper saws but it doesn't have variable speed, quick change blade or a foot switch so I'd be interested in the delta as well for the sale price.
January 30, 201214 yr That's cool John! So your gonna be getting into scrolling are ya! Greg and his crew must of gotten to ya John MorrisThe Patriot WoodworkerProud Supporter of Wounded Warrior Project and Homes For Our Troops
January 30, 201214 yr Author Well there are a few projects I would like to do and the scroll saw would certainly be a nice way to do them. I'll see. I don't want to spend a whole lot of money, but I would like to get something that will do a lot.John MoodyJohn Moody Woodworkshttp://www.johnmoodywoodworks.com
January 30, 201214 yr John, this saw is a clone of the Dewalt 788, which came out last year I believe, or towards the end of 2010. In it's price range it was picked by Scrollsaw woodworking and crafts magazine as the best saw, in a review they did last year. It has all the features of the Dewalt and as I understand comes with the stand and light. Delta has come out with a new model that is on their website, the only difference I can see is that the newer model has a catch to hold the upper arm during blade changes, whereas the current model along with the Dewalt, you have to support the upper arm when it is raised. I haven't actually used the Delta or a Dewalt for that matter, but all the reviews and discussions on other scroll saw forums are very positive, so I feel like it would be a great saw for you. And you won't beat that price, which even though they don't say it, it is probably their way of clearing them out and getting ready for the new one, which I'm not sure is even in production yet. Unfortunately it is made overseas. Greghttp://www.thesawdustfactory.net/
January 30, 201214 yr I just read a bunch of reviews and I didn't really find any negative reviews as a matter of fact they were all positive. I called my local Woodcraft and they do not have any in stock. This is an on line only sale as best as I can tell and they are limited stock so I ordered one ( for my Birthday coming up)  with $19.99 for standard shipping. I doubt you could beat the price. I did see the newer model on Delta's website as Greg stated above and with the exception of the arm retainer and the table looks to have a different profile, there is no difference. Good luck with your search.

January 31, 201214 yr John,  This the Dewalt 788 CLONE SAW. Exactly the same saw with minor differences. I saw one of these in person at a local hardware store and it happened to be sitting next to the dewalt 788. and it was mirror image. What i have been told is that once again Dewalt and Delta are now owned by Stanley and they have been giving dewalt 788 drawings to delta to see what they can do with it.Â
January 31, 201214 yr John I followed the link from our website when I ordered the saw but I didn't see anywhere that it mentioned our website. I hope I did it correctly. John Morris said:And don't forget to pull the trigger through our site guys! 10 percent commission goes along way to helping pay the hosting dues for us. January 31, 201214 yr Author Mike I pulled the trigger and ordered one also. I have a birthday coming up in March so this may be my early present.Let me know when you get yours and I'll do the same.Mike Dillen said:I just read a bunch of reviews and I didn't really find any negative reviews as a matter of fact they were all positive. January 31, 201214 yr Sounds good John! I've done a lot of research since yesterday and the DELTA is the same as the DEWALT. The difference is the paint and the name. When Stanley bought B&D they felt that Delta could represent the precision wood working better than Dewalt who normally represents the contractor side of the industry and this is one of the moves being made toward that end.
January 31, 201214 yr Author Like you Mike, I read a bunch of reviews yesterday. Didn't see anything that alarmed me. I have a few future projects I think it will give me the chance to do. Looking forward to giving it a try.Have you done any scroll sawing before?John MoodyJohn Moody Woodworkshttp://www.johnmoodywoodworks.com
January 31, 201214 yr Yes, but a long time ago. I started with a 2nd hand dremel, the one you could hook a flex drive to but mine didn't have the flex drive. It was very under powered and I had to stick to thin flat work and the saw used pin type blades so I was limited as to the type of work that the saw was capable of. I have a SAKURA 14" now that I took in on a partial trade for a craftsman drill press but again very limited as to the size of work and it doesn't have quick release or variable speed. I wanted to get serious with scrolling but to get an adequate saw I was put off by the steep price tag for a quality saw with the features that the high end saws have but hopefully this saw will deliver at a reasonable price. My main focus will be in Intarsia.
February 1, 201214 yr John, I was hoping you would finally get bit buy the OWWM bug. The wife and my birthdays are also in March. She gets to call me Old Man for the eight days that I'm a year older than she is. LarryJohn Moody said: Mike I pulled the trigger and ordered one also. February 1, 201214 yr Author I know Larry I thought about that. I don't know enough about the new ones to know what to look for in an old one. But I was going to ask you, since this model is discontinued does that qualify it as OWWM?John MoodyJohn Moody Woodworkshttp://www.johnmoodywoodworks.com
