Not really introducing myself.  I'm here to introduce y'all to the Decorah Eagles.

 

Here is a site that is dedicated to a pair of Bald Eagles in the nest in Decorah, Iowa.  It has an HD webcam mounted just above their nest which broadcasts 24/7.  (Every once in a while you will have to watch a 15 second commercial.)  (Forgot to tell you to click on the "Here is a site" link at the beginning of this paragraph.)

 

I have been viewing this pair of eagles for the past month.  They now have 3 eggs in the nest.  It is amazing the dedication these birds have for their eggs.  I have seen them snowed upon, rain, high wind and just about anything Iowa weather throws at them and at least one of them is always on the nest.

The Decorah eagle nest was featured in a PBS Nature series program, “American Eagle,†that premiered in November 2008. Filmed by cinematographers Robert Anderson and Neil Rettig in high-definition, the video is available on DVD

• How big is the nest? About 6 feet across, about 4 feet deep; it weighs close to 1000 lb.

• How old is the nest? The eagles built it in 2007. A previous nest close by fell when a windstorm broke one of the branches.

• Which is the male and which is the female? It is hard to tell the difference unless they are both on the nest. The female is larger than the male. This female has an arched ridge above her eyes that goes further back than on the male, and her eyes are surrounded by a greyish shadow; the ridge above the male’s eye is shorter and seems a little closer to the eye. The male has a line around his eyes that makes them look “beady,†and his head looks “sleeker†than the female’s.

  They have been together since the winter of 2007-2008. Her markings at that time indicated that she was about 4 years old. They successfully hatched and fledged 2 eaglets in 2008, 3 in 2009, 3 in 2010, and 3 in 2011.

• What is the area around the nest like? The nest is in a cottonwood tree on private property near the Decorah Fish Hatchery (operated by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources), on the banks of the babbling waters of Trout Run in extreme northeast Iowa. The nest can be seen from the hatchery, but visitors to the hatchery should keep their distance from the nest tree, both to respect the private property where the tree is located and to avoid disturbing the eagles.

This has become a family ritual now. The kids are addicted. We have the eagles up on our desktop all day now. The kids are glancing over at the screen now and then just to check on them. If they see the eagles make a move they get excited and hover around the computer. Mama and the kids were almost late getting off to school this morning because they were hung up here with the eagles. They got to see the two at once. That was really cool, and one of them was grooming itself this morning the kids loved that.

i watched these eagles last year. watched the babies grow up. it one of the more interesteing web cams/

they are so beautiful.
