Breaking News, (California Table Saw Safety Bill Dies in Senate)

First, i think Mr Dutton needs his head examined and 2 I think the companies that make the lower end saws need to just spend the extra money to use the technology and just maybe raise their prices to cover it. There is absolutely no reason this should not have passed, other than stupidity. People get hurt a lot from saws because they don't pay attention to where their fingers are in relation to the blade.

Very interesting observation Charles! Just a warning buddy, beware of the back lash! LOL. And I completely respect your opinion and fortitude to openly support the law. Good show Charles!

Yea I get that Jethro Gibbs head slap now and then lol. Sure there are times where the blade cuts through weaker wood faster than someone thought, and they lose a digit or they might just get scared to death by a close call if they are lucky. mostly it is that they don't pay attention because they are in a hurry to get things done :)

When my saws are outlawed, then I'll be an Outlaw with my saws.

The "LAW" should not have passed and I'm glad it didn't. Govt shouldn't be able to force you to buy something you don't want and whether the saw sells or not should be driven by demand and not because of the law that's imposed. It should be the free enterprise system that dictates ones success. If enough people want it then the other manufactures will provide it because of competition in the market place and not because of legislation that provides an advantage to one company over another! What ever happened to people accepting personal responsibility.

I think the United State should be split in half. Those who want to live in a "nanny state" and be pushed around by the government can live there. You can bow down to the likes of Steve Grass,Nancy Plelosi and Harry Reid.

Those of us who want to take on the responsibility and run our own lives will live in the other half. There should be a big tall fence dividing the two sections.

Richard I think your far too generous with the division of the country. I don't think those that want the nanny state should require that much real estate!

Nuttin political 'bout personal responsibility individualism and independence.

Tho some would make it so.

I follow along with the others here. I don't think the government should spend the time trying to regulate these items. I agree with Mike that if it is good enough technology and offered at a price point that is acceptable it will survive and succeed.

I served on an advisory board at Apple years back. People would ask when there were going to bring out a small laptop? There answer was what are you willing to pay for it? No one could understand their response. The technology for the small laptop was available years back but the parts and cost of production at the time was higher than the mass was willing to pay for it. When it will be accepted and purchased they will release it.

Same way with this new technology. When they put it on saws and offer it at a price point comparable with other saws then it will cause a person to consider the advantage and purchase that saw with the new technology.

I have just put my parents house up for sale. There are lots of houses on the market for sale right now. If I want to get a good price for mine and sell it quickly, then I have to offer something that makes it a better deal than the one down the street. That is all that Saw Stop has to do. Put out a saw with this technology on it at a comparable price and a product with the track history of the other equipment. When one is looking at a new table saw and looking at the difference in what is out there, if I can get one with this technology for the same or slightly more, then I would certainly consider it. But I don't need the government telling me I have to purchase because I don't know what is best for me.

Every time you turn on any piece of equipment in the shop, lathe, table saw, band saw, sander or router you have a responsibility to yourself to make sure you understand how it should be used and to use it for the purpose it was intended and in the manner designed. Lack of knowledge on how to use it and getting in a hurry and taking short cuts are the things that cause accidents.

So when you cut wet or conductive wood and put the safety in bypass mode it's just a regular saw then? Now your saw is less safe but your more careless because you are used to the saw protecting you instead of you protecting yourself. what do you suppose is going to happen! How many will forget to switch off the bypass. then who's fault is it they shortened a digit. Anytime a manufacture adds a bypass to there saftey system they open themselves to liability that they tried to avoid. the bypass is a case of money first marketability second and saftey third.

I think I'll go hug my Disston D8 now.

I'm just saying that this technology should be on all saws so that people would stop losing fingers and hands, that's all.

I agree with most of the posts - you can't fix stupid.  Yes, it was STUPID that cut off the tip of a finger - not the saw.

The comment in the article, "“I think that’s an unfortunate thing for woodworkers in California and the whole nation,†says Stephen Gass, who invented the SawStop technology. “There’s a lot of people who are going to be injured or suffer devastating injuries that they wouldn’t if the bill would have passed legislation.â€" is definitely a comment the inventor would say.  Of course he wants all saws to have it.  It is a great invention.

So who would regulate this law if it had passed?  The Director of Stupid Commission or OSHA?

Yes Charles, but when does it become the users responsibility. You can't legislate common sense and good judgment. Either the user exercises sound and safe practices or they suffer the consequences and the rest of the users shouldn't have to subsidize other peoples poor judgment. We all take risks in life such as how many people don't keep a blade guard on their table saw, jointer, or scroll saw to name a few and if you don't have them in place then you expose yourself to possible injury unless you exercise caution and if you don't then it's only a matter of time. If you are careless with power tools then you are probably careless with other things that are even more dangerous, I know I was. Many years ago I nearly cut off all four finger on my left hand because I did a stupid thing. Would SAWSTOP have prevented this? MAYBE but it was my fault and other woodworkers shouldn't have to be punished because of my carelessness.

Just found this link on UTube regarding the "Insta Stop" system.  After using a hot dog, this guy actually uses his own finger in a demonstration.
