Friday, November 23rd, Black Friday, What's on your woodworking Agenda?

Featured Replies

I guess with the sales starting in Thursday now, Black Friday may loose some of it's significant standing. So were you up early or out late hitting the bargains?

My wife had to be at work this morning at 3:00 but the store opened at midnight. People were lined up yesterday at many of the store. I didn't see anything in any of the ads that I would spend the day sitting in line just to save a little bit of money.

As a matter of fact, I didn't even get up and get on the computer to shop at midnight. If they have it when I need it that is good enough for me.

So I am off work today and about to head to the shop. I have all the supports for the porch swings cut to rough size and will try to get all of the with the rabbits and dados cut and the shaping done. I have enough slats cut to start the first one so I can start getting it assembled and out of the shop. Tomorrow will be pen turning day. I will do my best to get all of the pens turned and ready to ship put Monday to woodcraft.

I will probably be involved at some point in getting the Christmas decorations down and ready to put together.

Wow what a weekend.

So what about you, what is on your agenda. You are now full of all the fine foods from yesterday, so are you getting busy working it off today? Will it be time in the shop, decorating, HDL, spending time with relatives or just taking the rest of the weekend and watching football till you forget what games you saw? You know here at TPW we are interested in the projects you are working on, so please share them with us and post pictures when you can.

Now let us know, we are waiting to hear from all of you!

John, sounds like you got a good weekend ahead of ya's.

Today we traditionally get the decorations down and get our home Christmas up'd. My and my 8 yr old son will be outside hanging lights and the girls will be inside spreading cheer around the home. I should have it all wrapped up today then tomorrow it's back to work in the shop on the settee, I need to get that delivered in the next couple weeks. I'll also work on getting rocker sanded to finish and hopefully up the mountain to a gallery and sold before Christmas? I hope so!

Thanks for asking John, hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving buddy.

Usually, we are not at home for Christmas every other year. This is an off year, so no decorations to speak of. We miss having kids around before and during the holiday. Next year, we'll have grandkids here. They are in Okinawa, now.

In the shop, I'll be putting the finishing touches to the case I've been making for weeks, now. Wednesday, I made a bullet block to go inside the case. It holds 20 ea. .45 cartridges. This weekend, I'll be making a tray for gun cleaning supplies. And, maybe I can even get the case cut apart. Who knows?

Gene - know what you mean about missing the kids around holiday times.  This year we have one set of kids in Belgium and the other set have a plan to be in Las Vegas and Montana for the holidays.  Yep, we will be empty nesters this year.  Don't know what plans we have but probably won't be much.  May take the bride out to a great Christmas lunch or dinner.

On my woodworking agenda this weekend - making some ornaments and starting on a couple of "specials" for family and friends.  Started another thread for something I was thinking of making ornaments.  Must comment.

Hi John,

I'm still working out the pain issues but that doesn't mean that I am totally not doing any woodturning. I still have that candle holder that I need to finish sanding, that should be done tomorrow. Then I have a lidded box and a few pens to do. The lidded box is done in ambrosia maple. I'll post a picture tomorow, when I'm not fighting the pain as I am now.

Yesterday I got all but one of the sixteen braces for the four porch swings cut to shape. I was cutting the last one on the band saw and a corner I cut somehow got down on the lower cabinet and caused the blade to break. It was quitting time anyway so I have got to see if I have another blade or got to order one. Usually have a spare, but I may have put the spare on and forgot to order another one.

My son n law was here and helped me with the pens for troops so I should have all of the finished this weekend.

Today I have got to cut out a few cutting boards, get the Christmas decorations out, pick up all the leaves in the yard and hopefully cut some slats for the swings. Decorations will go up tomorrow afternoon since my wife has been working the long hours at retail this weekend.

Ok here is the pictures I promised yesterday evening.

Just a small box i am working on today that will probably be done by tomorrow night if all goes well. After I put the finish on the cap i realized that i need to do more sanding on it so that will be done too. it's about 2" wide and about 2 1/4 long maybe less. So I can make several of these since I have 3 sticks of it that are 12" long :).

I am very happy with the color I am getting from it after the finish is on, it rather looks like a "Wood Camo" or "Desert Camo" box :)

It was a bit wet when i got it but it's been sitting on my floor inside for about 2 months so I am hoping that there is no splitting as it dries.

After I get it off the lathe (when it's done), I'll post another picture here somewhere. Stay tuned.

Thanks for looking!

Sunday I'll be working on finishing up the Pens for the Troops and then get to working on some Christmas presents. Every year I say I'm going to get started early but I never seem to get the projects done early and find myself rushing. I think Christmas should be moved to February so I have time to get my presents completed....LOL.
