Buy a Winning Woodturning – Help Provide

 Housing for Injured Veterans

PARKERSBURG, W. VA. (December 2012) – Last minute shoppers looking for unusual gifts should check out the winning entries in The Patriot Woodworker Woodturning Contest that are currently featured on eBay through Dec. 23. Proceeds from the sale of the woodturnings will benefit Homes for Our Troops, a nonprofit group that helps severely injured veterans and their immediate families build homes that meet the veterans’ special needs.

Woodcraft and Easy Wood Tools teamed with John Morris and The Patriot Woodworker organization to sponsor the first-time woodturning contest. Patriot Woodworker members support US troops through The Wounded Warrior Project and Homes for Our Troops.

Winning pieces and their makers are:

Grand Prize – The “Gladiator Helmet” by Ronald Befferman of Egg Harbor Township, New Jersey, earned the top prize. He made the unique piece from walnut by creating seven turned rings consisting of 16 segments. Befferman won a set of Easy Wood Tools – a mini rougher, mini detailer, and mini finisher with red, white and blue colored handles autographed by Easy Wood Tools owner Craig Jackson.

Second place went to “Slimy,” Brian Limbacher’s whimsical circular vessel turned from spalted wormy maple that sits atop a cherry base stained black. Limbacher, of Morrow, Ohio, won an Easy Wood Tools mini rougher .

Third place winner is a large “Cherry Cup.” Jordan Ferr’s creation features thinly turned walls and intricate cut designs on the outer wall. Ferr,of Vinton, Indiana, transformed an unexpected crack in the side of the vessel into part of the design by drilling out several holes along each side and lacing it with leather straps and beads. She won an Easy Wood Tools mini finisher.

People’s Choice Award went to Lew Kauffman’s “Tapered French Rolling Pin” which was sold for $100 in the first round auction. Kauffman, of  Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, used sapele and maple for the rolling pin, giving it a “twist” by adding a walnut Celtic knot. He won an Easy Wood Tools mini detailer.

Contest Coordinator John Morris said a pen category was added to the contest at the last minute, because of the number of pen entries. Joel Green of Spokane, Washington

won the People’s Choice Pen Category with his “Leather Pen,” and Mike Dillen of Battleground, Washington, won the Patriot Woodworkers Choice Pen Category with his “Acrylic Madreperlato Cherry Red Pen.”

The “Gladiator Helmet,” “Slimy,” “Cherry Cup” and “Acrylic Madreperlato Cherry Red Pen” are featured on eBay. “We are hoping that this second round of auction bids will be much higher and provide a substantial donation to help injured vets meet their specialized housing needs,” Morris said.
