May 13, 201610 yr Good day folks, I am working on a project that requires the creation of a specification sheet for hand planes. I am having a hard time coming up with any examples in my online research, but I have put together something like this: Manufacturer/Builder: Stanley-Lie Nielsen-Clifton etc Type: smoothing-jack-joiner etc Size: No.8 - No.4 - No.8C etc Patent Date(s): Body Material: bronze, wood, metal, aluminum etc Body Length: Body Width: Overall weight: Frog Angle: Iron Type: O1, A2, etc Knob Material: wood - plastic - metal etc etc That is what I have thus far, any help in adding, or taking away unnecessary items in the spec list would be most helpful. Also any feedback at all on the list I provided is greatly appreciated, such as you do not agree, redundancy, un clear, etc. Thanks for any help folks! This list is a template for article creation in our new wiki, when an editor (our members) creates a research article about a hand plane, this list will be auto populated into the article for the editor (our members) to fill out. UPDATE 5-15-16: The items in red were added by feedback replies below. Thank you for your help!
May 13, 201610 yr how about body material. I'm thinking about wood vs. metal but maybe that's a non-issue.
May 13, 201610 yr Author That's a great addition to the list Lew, it needs to be included Body material: Wood - Bronze - Metal - Aluminum - etc etc right?

May 13, 201610 yr Author Thanks for your feedback Lew, that was a very important addition to the list, for not being a hand tool guy, you came up with a home run!

May 15, 201610 yr Either or......Marsh was a small time builder, Ohio Tool Co. was a Manufacturer, As was Union Tool Co.. Stanley tended to buy out all the good competition....even Vaughn & Bushnell.
May 15, 201610 yr Author Accuracy in grammar is very important when it comes to a factual wiki Steve. And you brought up some incredibly important points between a builder and a manufacturer. This is the kind of contribution that makes a wiki valuable. If our wiki was live, you would be able to make this distinction apparent in the form of an edit. I am very excited now for the wealth of information we have in our members like you, I hope you'll become active in our new wiki, as I hope many and all will. Great points you brought up, and "Builder" will indeed make it into the template.
July 9, 20169 yr Author Any additional commentary of this side project is greatly appreciated, anymore ideas from our woodworkers? Thanks!
July 13, 20169 yr What about "brand" instead of manufacturer/builder? I'm thinking some brands didn't do either (manufacturer or build) they contracted out with Stanley or others to make them. Craftsman comes to mind, maybe some of the other "store" brands like Montgomery Ward. Maybe that makes them the builder (?) Anyway, just a thought. I know far less about this stuff than others on the board. Edited July 13, 20169 yr by Fred W. Hargis, Jr

August 21, 20169 yr John, being the new kid here, I'm trying to get up to speed, so please bare with me. I'm trying to understand what your attempting to do. If you are constructing a template to insert information to compare and contrast all of the different available hand planes, I have a suggestion. I would consider adding a line to designate "Type". The Stanley-Bailey planes have gone through several modifications over the years, as I'm sure you know. There are up to 20 types (modifications) on some. Bill
August 21, 20169 yr Author It is a template indeed for our new wiki that is currently under construction. I am creating and building templates for our editors (you) to be able to create a research project, grab the project template and bring it in to your project, and you then will only need to populate the fields with the information related to your project. In this case, the template is for Hand Planes. And you would use this template within your research project. If you have not yet schnewj, you can click on the "Wiki" tab at the top and see our new wiki in the works. We hope to have it open soon. It will be completely open for all to edit, and share, and upload files, it will be a factual data base of any and everything related to wood. Here is a partial screen shot of the "Hand Plane Template" you would load into your project page, and you would fill in the missing information.
August 26, 20169 yr How about type of steel the blade, or iron, is made from? Different grades of steel have different properties, such as O1 vs PM-V11 as offered by Veritas from Lee Valley. I'm not a steel expert, but I think it "steel" bears consideration. OK, sorry about that one.
