Late yesterday, Sunday after putting the backer board on to the back of the maple with screws in each corner then scroll sawing the outside off then taking off the backer board and scroll sawed all the pieces apart I then started working on lowering different heights of some of the pieces with the band saw and I only remove wood off the top so all the bottoms still will match up good... The very most important thing to watch when scroll sawing the pieces away from each other is keeping the saw blade exactly straight up and down and go slower than normal. When sawing one has a habit of pushing the wood side ways to stay on the line when making sharp curves instead of going slow and turning slow and keeping the blade straight up and down... If you run the scroll saw correctly you will be able to remove two pieces from each other by either moving the pieces up or down from each other. I have to keep one and a half eye ball on the blade and the other half eyeball is placed on where the blades is going...take your time for this is no racing the clock thingy. So, out of the 18 different sawed out pieces only one piece won't slide up or down all the way out of the clock body and that is the top piece I have in its place in this picture... The smaller top piece will only slide into the larger piece from the bottom up of the larger piece and not like I would want for I glue the larger body piece down first then apply glue and install the rest of the pieces from the top down in to their cavities.... Its very important for when I get all the pieces carved and finished and its time to glue it all together I will first glue the clock body on to the backer board, then all the other pieces should connect to the rest of the body without any problems after I apply the glue and try to insert them in to their place. I found this one piece would only fit the larger body from the bottom up and with the body glued on first and sets up then I would have to tear something up probably if I try to remove the main piece. So only with the saw blade staying straight up and down can a piece slide in to its place either from the top or from the bottom as which ever way is needed to complete the installing.... Its one thing just to saw out pieces but its another thing to saw them straight up and down so if they have lots of ins and outs to each piece just make sure they will slide together both ways so which ever is needed it will happen!. So I have to remember to put these two pieces together before I add the glue to them and screw them on to the backer board. Then all the rest of the pieces will connect in to their place in the puzzle after the glue has been applied then all can be screwed down to the backer board forever...... I only have been working on the different heights of the pieces then start the serious carving of each piece.. The actual carving time has greatly been reduced because I have parted those places that would be a bugger to get the grinding bits in to and more so to get the real carving knives in to... I think when I finally get it all finished and hung on the wall it will look like one piece of wood was used and not some idiot who likes to ruin things with a scroll saw! This is as far as I have gotten today, Monday All my carving is still done from the front only. Maybe some day I might can figure out how to do the back sides also.
