Was asked awhile back to post things I make to organize my tools and such. Okay, never thought much of it as a project but it is made of wood and does require design and critical thinking to plan a layout AND make it work. For me at least, results may vary. Today's upgrade is a holder for my Forstner bits. This set was given to me by a friend and greatly expanded my range from 1 to 2 1/8 inches. Had to buy an oddball bit for a special job so I also have a 1 1/16 inch bit as well. Problem here was the boxes these things come in suck. Always hard to see the size and they never seem to stay put. Always those smaller ones that move around when pulling the box out. No problem, why should I pull the entire box out anyway. Should be like my sockets, look for size, grab and go. So put my thinking cap on and came up with this simple but effective design. As this is my SAE set I stained the thing with red chestnut. Red being typical of SAE, blue for metric. Sealed it with my go to finish for all shop stuff projects. Wait for it, maybe sit down for those who cannot bear to hear this mentioned. Minwax Semi Gloss Polyurethane. Yup, the plastic looking stuff. 3 coats even. I know it is not a finish I use for stuff that goes in the house but it is cheap and works for shop projects. Just want the wood sealed and easy to keep clean. Used least amount of space possible so I can squeeze some more room out of rest of drawer. Will have to come back to this later as I have a more pressing project with my work toolbox. Just a basic box with no bottom as I barely have enough space to put the bits in and clear the drawer above. They drop in, and hang there all nice and neat like. None of this rolling all over or pulling out the box then finding the right bit after putting them back in order. Wood is scrap plywood from who knows what project. Not really going for the Taj Ma Hall thing here, just a simple storage bin for my bits. Free handed the sizes with a 1/8 router bit and a HF special trim router. May not be the prettiest girl at the ball, but she'll turn a head or two.
