Beverly was 94. In 2001, Beverly Wingate married long-time friend, widower, and distinguished studio woodworker Sam Maloof, who had received the MacArthur Fellowship (known as the "Genius Grant") in 1985. Beverly had first met Sam in 1958 at the Los Angeles County Fair where he was exhibiting his handmade furniture in the renowned Millard Sheets-curated design exhibition. Beverly ordered a table from Sam, and they became life-long friends. For Beverly and Sam, the year 2001 was a whirlwind. It included not only their marriage and a trip to Washington D.C. for Sam’s retrospective at the Smithsonian American Art Museum, but it also marked the completion of the ambitious and multi-year-long Maloof historic home relocation project. This saw the home of Sam and Alfreda Maloof moved to its new and current site, making way for the 210 freeway. On the new site, Beverly envisioned, championed, secured funding for, and ultimately designed (along with Rick Fisher) the Maloof Discovery Garden. The Garden demonstrates sustainable, water-wise landscaping with California native and Mediterranean plants and is a certified wildlife habitat. As a Board of Director of the Sam and Alfreda Maloof Foundation, Beverly was revered for her warm social events for neighbors, donors and volunteers, and she was sure to serenade each Maloof Foundation staff member on their birthday with a song that she learned from her mother. A prolific fundraiser and a great connector of people, Beverly had a tremendous impact on the Maloof Foundation. “My mother’s commitment to the Maloof was an example of how she lived her life—always in service of the greater community,” says Todd Wingate, Beverly’s son. Born in Lincoln, Nebraska on May 15, 1931, Beverly cherished her childhood memories of running through the grass and climbing the elm tree in her yard. This lifelong love of nature defined her legacy in the Inland Empire as a champion of the environment. She participated in the effort to pass Riverside’s Measures C and R to regulate growth and development in the historic Arlington Heights Citrus area and along Victoria Avenue. She was also a founding president and board member of the Riverside Land Conservancy, and the Conservancy’s Wingate Maloof Award for effective environmental engagement is named in her honor. In addition, Beverly was a founding member of Riverside’s Citrus Heritage Park’s Board of Directors, a long-time trustee of the California Botanical Garden in Claremont, and the founder of the Maloof Discovery Garden. In an archived interview for the Inlandia Institute, Beverly Wingate Maloof shared that her dedication to preservation extended to the built environment as well. She was a founding member of the Mission Inn Foundation, which raised funds to stop the proposed demolition of the historic hotel and National Historic Landmark. She served as past president of the Riverside Art Alliance—the support group of the Riverside Art Museum, which stewards the 1929 Julia Morgan building. In the 1970s, she served as the restoration chair for the Museum of Riverside’s Heritage House. Beverly’s love of the built environment extended to her professional career as a renowned real estate agent in Riverside, founding Shelter West Realty. Her good friend Connie Ransom said, “Shelter West presented a beautiful home-grown business with local owners that was, to my mind, the best real estate office in the city of Riverside. When you went into their offices, you felt you were going into an old home. When Roger and I were in the process of closing Art Works Gallery, I had this ‘a-ha’ moment, that I could become a realtor. Beverly offered to be my mentor. She was my role model in so many ways. From the first moment I met her, I appreciated how sensitive she was to everything around her. She inherited from her mother a deep appreciation for art and beauty. She loved the act of preserving and cherishing historic buildings and homes, and that carried through to so many things that she did.” Sue Mitchell, Riverside resident, remembers this: “I thought it was very impressive that Beverly and her partners bought a big old house that they moved the offices of Shelter West Realty into and used the backyard for so many nonprofit events with no charge to them. It was very progressive to do something like that. It was a great gift to the nonprofit community. It was a wonderful old house and a beautiful backyard, and you always looked forward to going to events there.” In 1989, Beverly became the first woman to be inducted into the Riverside Sunrise Rotary. Throughout her leadership and fundraising efforts, Beverly also recruited and encouraged fellow women to join her, leading to her receipt of the Greater Riverside Chambers of Commerce Athena Award in 1994 for those who create leadership opportunities for women. Connie Ransom says “Beverly was a model for women going into business because she was determined to be of service to her clients and the community around her. She knew that her business didn’t stand alone.” In 1972, Beverly joined the folk music group The Why Nots: eight women who gathered every Friday morning for over 50 years to play guitars and sing, developing an extraordinary sisterhood. Kris Lovekin noted in Inlandia Institute’s publication While We’re Here We Should Sing, “So how edgy, how radical, it must have been for them to insist on a life that included not only motherhood, careers and civic service, but also guitar lessons and public performances, regular rehearsals…to prioritize their right to explore the world on their own terms unaccompanied by anyone but each other.” “Beverly was always part of the Riverside community growing up,” says Riverside Mayor Patricia Lock Dawson. “I knew her name, and she was always kind and an inspiration to me as a mother and business owner.” Beverly Wingate Maloof leaves behind a son, Todd Wingate, and his partner Steven Cason. The family asks that donations in her name be sent to the Sam and Alfreda Maloof Foundation for Arts and Craft at P.O. Box 8397, Alta Loma, CA 91701 or www.malooffoundation.org.
