    Bathroom organizers

My daughter wanted organizers for her bathroom. I had this pattern from The Winfield Collection, but it was kind of plain Jane, so I jazzed it up with a Wolf Howling at a crescent moon. I kept the fallout from the wolf and used the cutouts as a template to glue the fallout pieces onto the second organizer ( just a shelf, but hey ). By strategically drilling the pilot holes I was able to just sand the point of a fallout piece and minimize the change in the pattern.
  2. I have not posted recently but am happy to say that the master bath remodel is complete. This is one of the few home projects that I sat on the side-lines and watched the professionals. If you want to see the build pics, look here. Thanks for looking. Danl
  3. I have a bathroom light that was installed in 1953, when the house was built. In all of the bathrooms, a 4-light medicine cabinet was installed above the sinks. One of the two side lights has stopped working and I can't access the medicine cabinet(has two of the left side lights) to check the wiring and can't remove the cabinet without major damage to the surrounding plaster. I can post a photo if this post is allowed, to show the problem. Any advice would be appreciated.

    Something for August?

This thing hanging on the Bathroom wall.. Wall E World's finest....someone used a cove bit and made fake raised panels...because on the inside.. Just plain white "board"...I might recycle the hardware,,,the rest will just have to go to the Fire Pit...bacause ( besides being very UGLY) .... Does NOT match up with this cabinet over the sink...nor... The one over the Throne...so... The Plan...is to cut a few sticks of Ash up and build a "copy" in Ash...with real raised panel doors...to match .. These 2 doors...right down to the bead details.. And the joinery.. Moose & Squirrel Express has dropped off a "Plan" With a bit of a cut list... Will be dragging this tool out.. And try to get 2 panels ready for a glue up...to make the Raised panels for the doors.. Hopefully get this done and on the wall by Labor Day Weekend..I hope... Stay tuned..

    Bathroom remodel

I mentioned a few months ago that I was volunteered to remodel my son’s bathroom. I have a few family members who think carpentry is woodworking. Not so, but my son needed the help, and my wife would be the project manager. October 1, I started the demolition. The toilet and the walk-through door would be the only items reused in the new bathroom. This bathroom is a small room which lent itself to difficulties along the way. Also, nothing seemed to be level, plumb, or square. The initial bathroom had a window in the shower/tub area and there had been a leak. The plan was to permanently remove the window and install a shower surround. I removed the door, vanity, toilet, light fixture, tub, flooring, existing shower surround, and drywall and found this mess. The toilet had also been leaking and the floor had been patched. After I removed the existing drywall, I noticed that the leaking widow caused some rotting. The previous owners had left my son two – 12 ft pieces of siding. Just enough for this effort. My brother-in-law did a good job removing the window and trying to position the new siding pieces with the old pieces. I do have some experience with mudding but would not say I am an expert. I did surprise myself and other than a few questionable corners the finish work looked good. Because we patched the ceiling to accept the new ceiling fan something had to be done with the ceiling. After watching a few YouTube videos, for the 1st time I skim coated the entire ceiling. I am very pleased with the results and thankful that I only had a small ceiling to work with. Four paint colors were used for the trim, ceiling, walls, and accent wall behind the shelving. I trial fitted the vanity a few times because the new one was slightly deeper and moved to the left because of the pony wall. The old vanity had two doors. The new vanity had one door and three drawers. Just as you would guess, the drawers hit the plumbing. I had to remove four inches from one of the drawers and I routed material off another to make clearance so that the drawers would shut (yea, woodworking). I was not looking forward to installing the drain plumbing. I thought the drawer slides may be in the way of the plumbing. But one more trip to the big box store to get additional/different plumbing pieces and all was well with 1/16” clearance. The bathroom is done, and it looks nice. Three white oak shelves were added (yes, more woodworking) to provide additional storage. My wife asked me to help make an accent piece of some-kind of interior decoration. It was made of white oak also and will complement the shelving nicely. (There were two electrical outlets added to the right side of the shelfs; they are somewhat hidden). Thanks for looking. Danl

    Rec room bath mirror

Been trying to figure out what to do for a mirror in the rec bath Wife wanted to throw a dresser upper a way. Maybe I can save the mirror.
  7. Most of the time it seems the new post is a call for help, in a jamb and need some help getting out. I thought a good topic might be to take a room remodel that you have done and relay what one or two modification/change/update you made that really makes a good change for you. Does not have to be major, or expensive, just a change that you are very happy that you implemented. The goal would be to pass on some really beneficial info to others planning a remodel or change to a room. I thought I would start the topic this week with the bathroom. And yes, I have a bathroom to remodel in 2017! I will even start off since I completed a remodel of our master bath last year. Two items that I incorporated last year in the master bathroom remodel that I really like a lot. A very simple swap of the exhaust fan on/off switch to a timer switch. From 5 min. to 30 min. I really like it. No more turning the fan on and then wondering an hour later if I turned it off. Set it and forget it. Got it on Amazon for about $25 bucks. It does take up some space in the box though. In my pic, the toggle switch next to it is for the ceiling lights. The second item is the flooring we used. To replace the broken and cracked ceramic tile we installed "vinyl tile wood planks". It snaps together and floats like laminate flooring. It is very warm in the winter, cool during the summer. Has a textured surface so not at all slippery like the tile was. I really like it and plan to use it upstairs next year. So, how about it folks. Done a change to the bathroom that you really like having done it? Cal
  8. Bath Fitters has come and gone but the remodel continues. We ordered a custom vanity top but it won't be here for another couple of weeks. There's a lot of work to be done before it gets here. Mimi picked out the lights she wanted- after I had finished the painting. She picked 2 lights, unfortunately there is only one mounting box/access. I really didn't want to have to cut into the freshly painted wall and mount a retro box, so we settled on an escutcheon plate style mounting piece. Here's what I came up with- In order to keep from having to make a second hole in the wall, I opted to run the wires within the wooden plate. Some templates and a router created the "raceways" for the wiring. Wire nuts for the connections and silicon caulk to keep things connected and in place- tape is just there until the caulk cured. Ready for the wall- The vanity cabinet and a small wall cabinet are coming together, also- The doors are raised panel, stick and cope construction- got the ones for the wall cabinet glued together today. As well as the hinges located, drilled and test fitted. This is my first time using "Blum" hinges- at 93¢ each, the price was right. Other than the rather large "clearance distance" between the back of the door and the face frame, I like them. I think I'm going to make the drawer boxes with thru dove tails and add the fronts. So much to do, so little time!

    Completed my vanity

Just got this installed, though getting it finished was a real exercise in patience. The varnish was slow to cure enough for the sanding routine I used. Anyway, it's a plan that was in woodsmith and I made a mirror to match.
