January 27, 201313 yr  not sure IF this is the right forum for this.  Ok, here goes nothing.   I started to night by going down to the Dungeon Shop, where strange things happen. No, I did NOT paint them walls, either.   No wonder Igor ran away! Anyway, I needed to make a leg blank so I could taper two sides of it.  First, I needed to saw out a blankThis is what passes as a "Tablesaw" in my shop.  It IS on a table, and it is a saw. Blank was then shortened down to final length with a HANDSAW. Whew, Hard part is over with, now for some fun.First, get rid of any saw marks, and make the blank square.  Small jointer does that.  Next.I use a straight edge to lay out the taper.  7" from the top, is the start point. When it gets to the bottom, it is 1" thick.  Blank is 1-1/2" square.   With the line marked in a pencil ( So an Old Pharte can see it) time to cut away the waste. A #5 jack plane, with a cambered iron.  I start down at the bottom of the leg, and work my way towards the top of the taper. I take longer swipes each pass, checking on that black line you see.   Just about gone?  Time for the next step.a #8c BIG Jointer.   It will smooth out any dippity-dos along the leg.  When I get a nice shaving the length of the taper, time for the final plane.About two passes with the #6 Small jointer, and one taper is done. flip the blank, and repeat all the steps and a second tapered side will appear.   Note:  All four sides of the leg are now as smooth as glass, and NEVER even saw a piece of sandpaper.  And, just because they were sitting around, doing nothing, I sent one block plane along for a ride. Do you think it needs a sharpening back up? Warning: Doing legs this way can be messyStuff goes everwhere..... One leg done, three to go.  Then maybe some apron work.  Anybody want to try a tapered leg? Planer? I'm the 'planer', and these are what I use...
January 27, 201313 yr Good looking leg! Never thought I'd ever say that to a guy! How many sides get tapered? Out of curiosity, Why did you go back with the block plane? Did you ever decide what kind of wood that was?Sorry Igor left. Doesn't like purple, huh? One more question. What is that blue vehicle just to the left of the vise?Gene'The true soldier fights not because he hates what is in front of him, but because he loves what is behind him.' G. K. Chesterton
January 27, 201313 yr Author  Q#2: 2 sides got tapered. Only the front two legs will have the tapers, as the "back legs" will be against the wall.Q#3: I was going to add a champfer along the edges, and just for the fun of it, ran it down a face, just to see IF the iron was sharp enough. Q#4 Seems to be either an Oak, or an Ash.  Suren it's not Pine. Turns nails black.Q#5: Even I don't like the colour on the walls, Boss likes it though. (YUCK)Q#6: A small, battery powered Buzz Lightyear car. Youngest Grandson's "outdoor toy".   Not made for snow.Just got the rrest of the legs sawn, one of them tapered, the other two were left square.  I am BUSHED after an hour and a half of "work". Planer? I'm the 'planer', and these are what I use...
January 27, 201313 yr Bandit, thanks for the answers. You answered my unasked #7 with your #3 answer. Was wondering about the edges.Anxiously awaiting the leg/apron joints.Gene'The true soldier fights not because he hates what is in front of him, but because he loves what is behind him.' G. K. January 27, 201313 yr Author Ah, but it is FUN! If the irons are sharp, the plane just glides along.  Handsawing is where the workout is at.    That is why I have a circ saw down there, and a bandsaw.   But planes?   Love them.Planer? I'm the 'planer', and these are what I use...
