February 8, 201313 yr  followed me home today.  A little scroungy looking. Lookig a litle sad, was even put on sale.  Took it home, and looked this #3 Dunlap overLooks like someone liked the colour RED!  Tore it down the rest of the wayPretty, ain't it?  Ran a few of the flatter parts over the beltsander.   The others got clamped up, and sent to the wire wheels on the drill press.  Even the Brass got a shine.  ( I don't even have any BRASSO) Starting to look better.   Worked on the iron until it was nice and sharp.  Stamp on it says Made in West Germany.  As for the chip breaker.    Too longer then the iron, just to get the two to match up. Sole is now flat, and the sides are clean.  I will leave the handles alone, for now.  Put things back togetherLogo will get a touch up of red.  Got some oak for a test trackI think we have a "Keeper"??? Planer? I'm the 'planer', and these are what I use...

February 9, 201313 yr Author Picked up a can of Kleen Stripper for the handles.   Also bought a can of red, in case they need it.  If the wood is MEH,, it will get a coat or three of red.    Plan onstripping the red handles, an old BROWN union tote, and the Millers Falls #8.   The M-F #8 will get a refinish to bring out that fancy wood Millers Falls used,  Something called Gancalo???   Not sure on the brown tote as of yet, depends on what is under the brown junk of a finish. Be warned:   Tax check has arrived, Rust Hunt is being planned.    Target is a nearby town, with TEN Antique stores!  might be a Road trip....Planer? February 9, 201313 yr Steven, Goncalo (Goncalva Alves) is a beautiful wood from South America. Kinda looks like Koa. I think Colt or Remington used to make their grips from Goncalo. It's pretty dense. good wood for any kind of handle. Out here, Woodworker's Source has it in stock. For a guy that cringes when he pays for red oak, Gancalo is out of my price range. It definitely ain't paint grade.Gene'The true soldier fights not because he hates what is in front of him, but because he loves what is behind him.' G. K. Chesterton
February 9, 201313 yr Author Millers Falls went from Cocobolo to this "other" wood for their "grips".   I had a #9 last year that i stripped of the old, THICK finish onMaybe the #8 will look like this? Planer? I'm the 'planer', and these are what I use...
