February 10, 201313 yr  In addition to the "Orphan Plane" that is now getting a new coat of paint on it's handles, two more rusty & crusty planes showed up last night. White Lever cap is a Worth #4, needed as spare parts for another #5, just in case.  The Black lever cap is a #3 sized mystery Plane.  It has a cast iron frog, like early Stanleys, a very thick ( 0.170!) but tapered iron.  Both have low knobs, but the Mystery plane has a Stanley style Brass nut on a steel bolt sort of thing.  The Worth has just bolts.  White Lever cap is now a shiny one.  Same with the Black one. Another look at the next restore project?Already have some parts cleaned up.  That little #3 might be fun to do.  The tote was broken in two, now all clamped up, waiting on glue to dry.  Stay tuned.... February 10, 201313 yr Author Ok, got the "Ironworks almost cleaned up on the #3, and started a bit on the Worth #4.  Waiting on the wood parts for the #3, but, after a little work...We have a few clean and shiny parts, and some casting numbers!   Like the iron?   That thing is huge!   1-3/4" wide, but 0.170" thick at the cutting edge!  tapers away to a thinner top.  Base has a "C 72" cast into it, Frog has a "C 55" on it's bottom.Brass handle nuts, on Stanley threaded bolts.   Wheel is a steel one, not brass. As for the Worth plane, been getting the rust off, slowly.    I can use the iron and chipbreaker on my Parplus #5 as a second blade.  There is a cambered iron in the #5 now, this will give me a straight edged smoother iron.  Just switch them as needed..  I can clean up the rest of the #4, and even use the cambered blade in it. waiting on the glue to cure completely on the broken tote, before it gets a refinishing.  Currently, counting the new arrivals, there are five sets of handles either getting stripped, or awaiting their turn.   Getting crowded on that little bench... February 12, 201313 yr Author Ok, after some detective work.  Hibbards' True Value started a line of "Private Labeled" hand tools in 1932.    From the looks of things on this #3 plane, it just MIGHT be that old.  I now have the tote repaired, awaiting a re-finishing.   Front knob is refinished. Brass is shiny. Bolts are cleaned up.  Still have to resharpen a very thick tapered iron. Worth #4:  Funny shade of Blue/Green on the base, and the frog/toad. Knob has been cleaned off and a coat of BLO on it. Toad bolts need cleaned, base need a "409" bath to get get of YEARS of dirt.  Sides and sole need worked over. Adjuster wheel is BRASS, but won't fit the Hibbards plane.  Chipbreaker and iron de-rusted, just need to fit the CB, and sharpen the iron. The Red handled Dunlap "Orphan Plane" has the handles being stripped, or at least I tried to.  Knob was almost stripped to bare wood, but it is STILL RED!   Grrrrrr!  I smooth out the tote, call it good, and give both a fresh coat of red paint.Millers Falls Knob is stripped down to bare wood.  Gancolo is a nice looking wood! Gave it a coat of BLO for now.  Might get the tote done later this week.Called off work tonight.   Can't walk!   I can, but it takes a LOT of Tylenol/ Codeine pills.  Can't work around machinery, or even drive to work. But at least i can walk. Planer? February 12, 201313 yr Great job Steve!! And thanks for the research on these planes. Very educational. I love following along buddy.I am sorry to hear about your health and work. You know what they say Steve, gettin old takes a lot of bravery, and you have a big supply of that!John MorrisThe Patriot WoodworkerProud Supporter of Homes For Our Troops and Wounded Warriors Project
February 12, 201313 yr Author  Ok, time to get to work, cleaning things upTo sand off all the rust, would be a waste of a sanding belt.  So, I use a wire wheel to get rid of most of it. Like thisLooks a little better.  Even used that brush for "flatwork"I even cleaned off all the dirt on a baseI also had a few handles to clean up. This is how I re-finish a knob.  Note that ugly brush on the bench.   I used it to refinish the totes, by removing all the old finish that brush could reach.  I set up a sharpening centerI had a few uses for the belt sander.   I finished cleaning up the totes, using that small wheeled end.  I also set up a jigTo try to get a start on a few edges.  Went from here to the stones, by removing the sander, and added the stones to the vise.  I also got a "sanding block" with some 1000 grit sandpaper, and added it to the vise.  The grinder was for a couple irons that were a bit too roughly handled in their lifetime.  Got a new edge, and a flat back.  Then off the the rest of the routine. Pretty, ain't it?   This is the sole of the Worth base.   Just a few minutes on the sanding belt.   I got after it a bit morealmost done.  Time for a test track?Nasty looking Oak/Ash?   Time to take a test driveThis is the completed Worth #4 The Hibbards #3 < Note the repaired tote.   Still have to finish sanding it done, and add a finish. The Dunlap "Orphan Plane".  Last time, it was showing off some RED handles.   Now I know why they were painted red.I stripped the finish off of the Millers Falls #8.  Maybe a little BLO ( holding my nose) to spruce it back up? Well, I used up most of the morning, doing this refurbbing.  Now I have a few "new" planes to work withTil next time.... February 14, 201313 yr Author Update: The Smelly Stuff in the Blue can has been applied to all the handles. One tote has since been swapped out. A look at some of these "Gems"Millers Falls #8.    Thick red varnish that was factory applied, is now replaced by the BLO. NextDunlap #3. Used to have bright RED handles, now has BLO handles. NextHibbards True Value #3. The tote has been since replaced by a better looking one.  An old Union #4G broke a bolt off IN the base of the plane.  Union parts are going on sale.  Tote looked very good, so I traded it for the Hibbards tote. I'll keep the repaired tote as a spare. NextA Worth #4.   A big heavy number four at that.  Over 10" long!  Not too sure about that Blue/Green paint it has going on.  Handles are with just a coat of that Smelly Stuff in a Blue Can.   Money shots?  Maybe just a Group shot, after each took a trip down an old Pine 2x4?I also tested out another plane. I had resharpened a big old iron.A Union #5A.   About the size of a Stanley #5-1/2.    Iron looks to be sharp again.  As for a "regular" #5Looks a little puny, doesn't it?  By the way, Got a brand new shop light installed today!  A T-8, dual bulb, 48" long one. Shop is nice and BRIGHT now, almost as bright as it's operator??BTW, this is the ENTIRE shop area I have...
