Stock for aprons are in the shop(now)

finally got the six pack out of the van's trunk, this morning.    Two long pieces of 1x4( eh,~~~)  and four shorter ones.   Took them down to the dungeon shop, and laid them out to warm up a bit.ning-sdc14375-16658-9.jpg?width=750Could be Beech, could be Sycamore?     Hard wood, whatever the name.  Bugs seemed to like it, at one time. Started to get the planes moving on these boards, as no two are exact matches.   ning-sdc14376-16658-55.jpg?width=750ah yes, the infamous board with .....Character!     Them's not pencil lines, they be CRACKS.  Got a plane after the worst offendersning-sdc14377-16658-19.jpg?width=750Until all the faces were smoothed out.   Easier to tell exactly what I have..   Next, the edge grainsning-sdc14378-16658-81.jpg?width=750Mr. Worth taking on a couple.   I was trying to get all the boards the same width.   Anyhoo, as each board or pair of boards were done,  laid the remnants out to see what I had.ning-sdc14379-16658-12.jpg?width=750I used the handsaw to cut the two long aprons to the same length, around 20", or so.    The two short ones are around 12", give or take a hair.  That thing in-between them is a leg, awaiting a little chopping.   Just might have a little figure to it?   here is the rest of the partsning-sdc14380-16658-42.jpg?width=750Give all of this a good coat of BLO ( stuff do stink, though)  and maybe more figure will show up?

Gave a few planes a clean up today, after all that dirty work they've done  (eye candy, anyone?)ning-sdc14381-16658-44.jpg?width=750I guess the one one the left was camera shy.    Another look?ning-sdc14382-16658-83.jpg?width=750Count the planes?

Planer? I'm the 'planer', and these are what I use...

Lookin good Steve, how hard was it to push those planes through that rock hard old wood?

Got off work this morning, got caught up on the computer.   Headed down for some therapy, aka The Dungeon Shop!    Needed a way to keep me ON my feet.    Sitting down, and THEN trying to walk is Moidah!

Laid out for some tenons, my stylening-sdc14383-16663-91.jpg?width=721I carry the lines all the way around, about 1/2" deep from the end.    Used a coping saw to cut down until the blade is just below the surface of the board.   Grabbed a wide chiselning-sdc14384-16663-8.jpg?width=721and popped the waste off.  Some of the grain was knarly curved.    Took awhile to finish paring the cheek flat.    After maybe an hour's work of lay out saw, and chop,  I had all but one tenon done.    That one only took 15 minutes, mostly in paring work.   I then laid out for mortises in the legs, using each tenon in the spot they were going to be.     Chopped a bit sawed a little bit, pare a while.   Eight mortises soon were done. ning-sdc14386-16663-23.jpg?width=721and once the chopping out was done, time to clamp up a couple items. ning-sdc14387-16663-35.jpg?width=721Yeah, yeah, yeah..  I did have a little squeeze out.   But, it is on the apron's inside face.    Not the Show-off face.

These two are about ready to come out, and the next assembly work is almost ready.    Have to handsaw a few braces for the corners.  May run a block plane done the legs, just to ease the corners a bit..

Ain't "therapy" Grand???

I like you method of cutting mortises.

Have gotten the rest of the base glued up, corner braces installed.    Just waiting on the glue to cure out.

Mortises:   I have done a lot over the years, always looking for a quicker, easier way to make them.    The only loud noise now a days is my cussing along.    Still waiting on a chisel to slip and nail me.    So far, so good.   IF a mortise is not near an edge, then I will just chop it out.    Really doesn't take any longer than a powered tool way.

Will have more photos later today.
