Instead of paint which hides the grain of the wood to a certain extent I'd suggest the use of dye. You would have to tinker with the dye and wood combination to get the desired shade but the wood grain would show through.

depends on what color or finish you want.  

I like finishing with waterlox.

Cliff, if i do any painting, it is with a small brush since the pieces are rather small.
