Caster Question

Featured Replies

Now that I have finished the kitchen cabinets for my wife, it seems that my next project will be a rolling island.  It will be solid oak and have raised panel doors identical to the kitchen cabinets and have 2 drawers.  Here's my question.  I'm thing of using castered wheels (probably 2") but I'm unsure how much this beast will weigh.  Any suggestions and/or suppliers?

I used ones like this (grey wheels) under the roll about island/butcher block/cabinet.

I removed the locks from the front two as they where not accessible after installation.

These are rated at 130 lbs each.

Ron I would recommend using urethane or rubber wheeled casters. Plastic wheels can mar flooring. Unless your cabinet is going to weigh 300 lbs or more I'd think 2" would be overkill. The caster in the pic has a wheel that's 1-9/16". I have a supplier here where I get all my casters for shop projects and they are very good on prices.

This caster is from Rockler but there are many out there that have a stem or plate mount. I've always preferred plate mount over stem mount because of their strength.

Ron this is the place I buy my wheels from. Their prices are about half of what Rockler & Woodcraft charge. If you would like, contact them and if you decide to buy from them I can pick them up and ship to you, but I believe they will mail order them as well. I'm going there today so if you need I can look their furniture casters over for you.

THabnks for your work Mike.  Let me draw this thing up and take a guess at what the weight is going to be.

Lew, what does this unit weigh?  I'm going to put a maple top on this one also.

Not sure, Ron. It's all 3/4" oak- some ply, some solid. The top is 1 1/2" thick. It has 2 full extension shelves. Over 100 lbs for sure. Plus, inside there's a big and little food processor, a cast iron dutch oven and misc. electrical small kitchen utensils.

Colored or clear Urethane will not mar like carbon black plastics will.

Generally: The more you spend the better the result.

It is inconceivable that you will have a rolling island that will exceed the capacity of Four casters.   Most can take 200 pounds each.

That said I'm a big fan of Colson Casters and their Series 2 is rated for 325# each

An island presents a touchy question when it's on wheels: Cutting with knives

When doing fine work the finger and the knife are in very close proximity and  a caster than  can rotate even if it is locked and won't roll presents a serious issue.  This is worse when the cook is trying to break down things that are resistant  like carcasses and big vegetables like rutabaga etc., even carrots can require enough force to cause a shift.  The force needed  for some things to both hold the world and force the blade can easily cause locking swivel casters to rotate.

These are reasons that I will not put such a caster on any machinery.  I insist that machines all rest on the floor.

If the Island is almost never going to move you can use Great Lakes casters that lift and lower the Island to engage the wheels or the foot pads alternately.   You can also engineer such a thing that operates from levers in the unit  operating just as do those little thrust toggle clamps.

Casters on small islands used for cutting are fine. You lock the wheels and casters. There are casters that lock the wheel as well as the caster.

If your floor is that out of level then you have bigger problems than your island rolling away while cutting on it.

I have casters on my router table, drum sander and lathe cabinet. All of the casters have locking wheels and locking casters and I've had no problems with any of them moving or shifting while applying a load or using. As long as your cabinet or cart is engineered and constructed correctly with a low center of gravity there should be no problem!

Who makes 'em?

Cliff I bought a set of casters yesterday with the caster & wheel lock. Not sure of the manufacturer, they're made in Taiwan. I bought these from a company "John W. Negus Co." here in Portland. I've been buying from these guys for years and never had any problems with any of their products They have the same style caster with the wheel & caster lock with wheels from 2" up to 8". You can get them from Granger, Woodcraft, and many other retailers as well. In the pic Lewis posted you can see the same style caster on his island and it has a double lock as well.

In the pics you can see the caster toe lock has teeth that engage with teeth on the caster base.

Mike, that is a very decorative wheel.  What's the brand name?

I'm not sure Ron. They're an import but no band name stamped on them. I can tell you they are well made. They have ball bearings for the wheel & casters, all the wheels are concentric and the fit & finish is great. I was on the process improvement team at my work for several years and I've used these same type wheels on many of the carts and platforms that we built for our engine, prop, accessory and sheet metal shops and we've had no failures and believe me we've put them to the test. I can see If I can find the manufacture's name and get back to you. A set of 4 was $43.00 but these have a 4" wheel and the smaller wheel set is much cheaper. Cheaper than other suppliers.

The ones I used lock both the wheel and keep the caster from turning.

Was not aware of these casters. Very interested in this. Names or what ever would be a great help.

Woodcraft has these- more expensive, however
