March 16, 201313 yr there are times where i really love my lathe, it's quiet and runs like a dream, but then other times it sounds like someone throwing rocks in a 55 gallon drum at 650rpm. The bearings were both recently checked and seem firm and not burnt or damaged in any way. When we took it apart we didnt see that you had to take things off in a certain order (had no manual to go by) so the speed indicater lost a few teeth, but that is no reason for this kind of noise. There is no wobble that I detect in either the motor or the headstock anywhere. Any other ideas?Charles NichollsSite Hostnicholls61@att.netProud supporter of The Wounded Warrior Project, Homes For Our Troops and the NRAhttp://www.etsy.com/shop/nichollswoodworks
March 16, 201313 yr How long has it been Charles? Is it still under waranty?John MorrisThe Patriot WoodworkerProud Supporter of Homes For Our Troops and Wounded Warriors Project
March 17, 201313 yr Author Its been going on since just after the warranty expired John. About Nov/12 we were investigating it then but couldn't come up with any clear solution, so since it has been a while, i figured I'd open the discussion again.Charles NichollsSite Hostnicholls61@att.netProud supporter of The Wounded Warrior Project, Homes For Our Troops and the NRAhttp://www.etsy.com/shop/nichollswoodworks
March 17, 201313 yr My live center- on the tail stock- sometimes makes noise if I overly tighten it. I think the bearings in it are getting worn.Lew Kauffman-Wood Turners Forum HostTime traveler. Purveyor of the world's finest custom rolling pins!
March 17, 201313 yr Author That gives me an idea Lew, I'm thinking that maybe the headstock bearings might be taking too much pressure from over tightening. but then it may already be too late for them but they fel solid with no leaks.Charles NichollsSite Hostnicholls61@att.netProud supporter of The Wounded Warrior Project, Homes For Our Troops and the NRAhttp://www.etsy.com/shop/nichollswoodworks
March 17, 201313 yr Does it make the noise when nothing is mounted on the head stock? How about when using only the chuck to hold the piece and the tail stock pulled back out of the way?Charles Nicholls said:That gives me an idea Lew, I'm thinking that maybe the headstock bearings might be taking too much pressure from over tightening. but then it may already be too late for them but they fel solid with no leaks.Charles NichollsSite Hostnicholls61@att.netProud supporter of The Wounded Warrior Project, Homes For Our Troops and the NRAhttp://www.etsy.com/shop/nichollswoodworks
March 17, 201313 yr Author Actually I am uploading a short video as I type this to answer that very question. It does rattle with no load on it at all or when turning anything at all.I'll re edit my last post here once the video is ready. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DmK1jaUjskwLewis Kauffman said:Does it make the noise when nothing is mounted on the head stock? March 17, 201313 yr Maybe eliminate one thing- the motor- by removing the belt that drives the head stock and run. If quiet, then something in the head stock. Also, check the head pulley. If it is not tight, it will make a noise. There should be some sort of set screw that holds the pulley/key tight.Charles Nicholls said:Actually I am uploading a short video as I type this to answer that very question. March 17, 201313 yr Author Sorry Lew i meant to do that alrady. The motor runs like a champ with no rattles, and I can't really detect and bumps or catches when I frrehanded spin the headstock, there might be a little tick there but I can't feel it.  Lewis Kauffman said:Maybe eliminate one thing- the motor- by removing the belt that drives the head stock and run.
