Rust Hunting, progress reports

The Corsiar #5 jack plane now has a sharp, cambered iron, ala Chris Schwarz.    It also has a fresh coat of Barn RED paint on the base castingning-sdc14562-15642-60.jpg?width=750Remember, this was just an $8 rust bucket.

Next:  A Millers falls "V" line plane, all sharpened up, and ready for workning-sdc14565-15642-64.jpg?width=750Some squirrelly grained Pine.    No chatter, just nice, easy to cut shavings.    Not even hard to push along, even.    Ok, one last plane, for nowning-sdc14566-15642-86.jpg?width=750My $8  York pitch Dunlap #3.    Once the iron was sharpened up, makes nice shavings, with very little effort.     I do have it's bigger relative on the way.    Looks the same, just in a Jack plane size.  $15 for it, though.      jack plane prices, i guess.   Just won a Millers Falls #9 tonight.    Be here late next week.  It is the same size as a Stanley #4.      Just something about those M-F planes I like.     =

Chatter marks on that Pine board came from a Companion #4 I was also working on.ning-sdc14564-15645-87.jpg?width=721It had issues of where the chip breaker and the iron were meeting up at.    Allowed quite a bit of wood chips to get stuck between them.    Took awhile to get things to mate together better.     Hole where the CB's bolt came through had a ridge from being threaded.     Ground that flat.     Edge of the CB needed bent just a hair, and regound to meet the iron, without any gaps.     Chatter is from the frog not be set right.     Had it too far forward.  Since moved it back a bit.   May be heading to Ebay?????

The Companion is now listed on Ebay,  along with a handyman #1205 jack plane.     I still have a FrankenBailey #5 that i will keep for me.   There is a Dunlap #5 on the way, and  I have that Corsair #C-5  jack plane.  Trying to keep the herd under control.     About like raising Hares,  they just keep adding up.

As for Number Four sized planes?    i have one in hand, and one one the way.     Both were by Millers Falls.   Seems to be decent planes.

"Paint it Red, and a Marine will fall in love with it"  sort of thing?   Red handles, and Red frogs, sheesh....
