Slant front tool cart completed!

Featured Replies

This is a project I've been wanting to build for some time and I finally just knuckled down and built it. The plans are from woodsmithshop.com. I wanted to change up the look somewhat from the plain look that the plans depicted.

The case is made from maple plywood and poplar edge trim. The drawer boxes are made from pre finished maple 1/2" plywood and mounted with 16" blum full extension drawer slides.

The drawer fronts are made from poplar with walnut trim strips and a 45 deg. bevel around the perimeter of each drawer front.

I added a removable shelf to the top also made from maple plywood and poplar trim and I carried over the walnut trim & beveled the top & bottom of the front trim.

The case is stained with 3 coats of Minwax Gunstock stain until I got it dark it enough and then applied 4 coats of Minwax wipe on poly. The drawer fronts and shelf I left natural and finished with clear poly so they stood out from the case.

Thanks for looking!

That turned our really nice. I like the contrast in colors. The walnut accent pieces are a really nice touch on the drawers.

Very nice!!!!

Thanks Ron & John. I really am pleased with the way it turned out. I may add the removable tool box that mounts where the shelf is but for now I'll leave the shelf until I decide if I need the extra drawers.

A brown Kennedy machinists box would look nice sitting up there.

Thanks Richard. It'll get lots of use in my shop. I try not bang into the cabinets because I hate re-finishing.

Thanks Lewis! I am really pleased how the stain came out. When I applied the first coat of stain I thought I'd messed up but after applying several more coats to darken it, I was satisfied and then the poly finished it off. I would still like it to be darker to match the walnut stripes a little better but all in all a successful project.

That's just spot on fantastic. If I made something like that for the shop my wife would have it take over for the kitchen. When making shop projects we try to keep them plywood or MDF so she doesn't steal them on us. Amazing work Mike.

Thanks Michael! I know what you mean. After completing the cart my wife want's me to build new kitchen cabinets. I don't want to put any more money into this house, I want to sell and move to a location where I can build a dedicated shop. Can't do that until the wife gets a clean bill of health. Probably 2 years away.

Thanks John!  I lightly sanded the first coat and continued to apply stain until it darkened and then applied poly.

That's a fine looking tool cart. Hate to see that it get scratches and paint. Great design, wood combination, joinery and craftsmanship. Superb work Mike!
