March 21, 201313 yr After I finished building my wife's cabinets, I had four raised panel doors left over. (Thanks to a 1 inch miscalculation) My wife decided that the doors had a higher use and that a floating island would be in order. Here are a few pictures of the progress so far. The first coat of finish will go on tomorrow.   The Culprits - Don't they look innocent?  The panel with the carving goes on the side opposite the drawers  Maple Top   Stained with light early American stain  I really like the way this carving came out   to be continued........... March 21, 201313 yr Author Thanks guys. I also like the color. Mike, I built the top and there's a story about the maple. A couple of years ago I was at an auction of a defunct furniture factory and I bought a pallet of maple shorts for $5 only because noone else bid on it. The maple was 5/4 and 4/4 and were 18" to 30" in length. I've made about 25 cutting boards from the load so far so I've definately got my money back. In addition to the pallet, I bought about 100 BF of hard maple.Ron DudelstonSite AdministratorAbove and Beyond WoodWorks
