The Kitchen Island

Featured Replies

After I finished building my wife's cabinets, I had four raised panel doors left over.  (Thanks to a 1 inch miscalculation)  My wife decided that the doors had a higher use and that a floating island would be in order.  Here are a few pictures of the progress so far.  The first coat of finish will go on tomorrow.

Wow Ron that's turning out very nice. The carving is very nice as well. Did you build the butcher block top? I can't wait to see the finished product.

Thanks guys.  I also like the color.  Mike, I built the top and there's a story about the maple.  A couple of years ago I was at an auction of a defunct furniture factory and I bought a pallet of maple shorts for $5 only because noone else bid on it.  The maple was 5/4 and 4/4 and were 18" to 30" in length.  I've made about 25 cutting boards from the load so far so I've definately got my money back.  In addition to the pallet, I bought about 100 BF of hard maple.

Will do Fred but I can guarantee she won't use a knife on the top.
