March 27, 201313 yr  After this plane FINALLY showed up in my mail boxIt was scheduled to be a restore project for today, after a nap, when I got home from work.   Took it down to just .....parts.    Got out a small tuperware tub for the small stuff.   Wire wheels in the drill press, plus a can of Citrus Mold Cleaner from work, did a lot of the clean off. Since this was made about the time of WW11, very little brass was used.  Handle bolts were blued steel ones. The larger itemsThe wheel is the only brass on this plane.  All these items are now nice and shiny.  Handles? Might be a bit fuzzy focus?   Under the red paint, and the dark walnut stain/varnish is some light coloured hardwood.   Now they have a coat of BLO on them.  Base?Sole is now flat, sides are shined up.  Someone had painted, in red, the word "TOM" on both sides.  That mess is gone, now.  Iron?  It got it's back flattened, and a new edge groundthe backand the "business end".    Oak 2x2s are for a stool project, later.  Ok, next?   Maybe a money shot of the test drives?and a few "After" shots?and the sole of this little lane?A Millers Falls #9, about the same size as a Stanley #4.   Not too bad.... March 28, 201313 yr Author  No stranger to them red handles showing upone of the Dunlaps I have in the shopand after.    I have had a few with those painted handles, all but one was stripped back to bare wood.  And, I sold that one. I had a little "Breaktime' tonight.   I also had a Franken-Bailey #5 with a few nicks in it's iron.    Trip to the grinder to get rid of the nicks, and start the back on it's way to being flat.    Then a trip on the beltsander raceway, to get rid of the grinder marks.   The back also got a hit.    Then a Stones Tour.     Finally a trip over some 2k grit paper.   Set up the Pine Test Trackand made some shavings.    Just a collections of parts, that just happens to look like a Bailey #5 Jack plane.   The iron came from Home Depot.  Thats right, a $3 Buck Brothers iron.   handles came from my old Pole Barn Shop, and were made of Black Walnut.     One more look?Just a cheap, old plane...
