American Woodworker Review on the Laguna LT14 3000 Band Saw

Featured Replies

I was sent a review by a fellow woodworker who has been looking for a band saw, and he has been wanting to get a Laguna bandsaw for some time now. He sent me this review so given what I know about our supporter Laguna Tools and with this review, if I thought the bandsaw would be a good investment and a great machine in his shop. My answer? HECK YA!!!! And a 2 hp Leeson motor to boot and with a 3 hp upgrade option! Man what a saw. Now given the fact the review is from January 2011, the saw is still available at a great price of only $1395.00.  Without spoiling the review, I'll just let you all read up on this great piece of machinery and you be the judge. American Woodworker magazine has been known to be harsh in their reviews, I trust the review, and I hope if your thinking of a terrific 14" beast that can plow through any re-saw project and cut delicate scroll like circles, then you owe it to give this one your closest attention. And remember, Laguna Tools supports our troops, so they are one up on the competition already! Without further adieu, please click on the .pdf file below.

I gota Sweedsh WOODIE~~~~

Not sure how bias my reply to this will be - But - The review was dead on. Our neighbor has a $500-600 14" bandsaw, I will not mention the brand but it is actually like a toy compared to our SUV. We almost feel like saying, "Aww that's a cute bandsaw". every time we see it. Matthew chuckles to me about it and I have to tell him to behave. tut tut tut KIDS!!!

Michael, the pdf opens slowly, all the sudden I have this software called pdf.js viewer that opens these up and it's incredibly cumbersome, all the PDF's used to open in Adobe by default, do you have any idea what is going on here. I checked my default firefox applications the Adobe is checked on. Do you see what I am seeing?

Torbin is a genius with only his heart to rival his head! I am so glad his work is getting the shining reviews it deserves.

John, definitely go for the 3HP upgrade if your going to resaw allot. You will not regret it!

Nate

Nice demo. I haven't kept up with advances in technology for the band saw but I would have thought for this kind of money the guides would have been roller bearings such as the Carter style guides, at least on the larger saws.

I'm not in the market yet Nate! I still need to get a lathe first! Working on that now but things keep popping up!

John,

O yeah, that is right, about the lathe. That is frustrating that things keep popping up. I get that too.

Mike Dillen,

This is considered a matter of opinion by many people, but there is science behind it! The Laguna guides keep the blade running cooler and straigher. Ceramic does not conduct heat, so the blade can stay incontact with it. That is why Nasa uses it for the shuttle noses. If you go to this link Torben explains it in a couple of videos.

Speaking of band saw guides, what do you guys prefer , ceramic or cool blocks?

I would use roller bearings if they weren't so darned expensive. Been working on making a set but what I found when I went bearing shopping is that the small bearings- like on the Carter product- are vastly more expensive than the larger ones. I need to try and develop a design that will use a larger bearing and not take away any of the distance between the table and the upper guide.

I just had my first experience with cool blocks yesterday when I was up at dads place and he had set on his BS. I like them, the blade seems like it tracks much better, and if I am not imagining, the saw seems quieter too.

I like using both guides. The two guides, in my opinion, somehow differ in performance when it comes to the material/stock you are cutting. I use ceramic when cutting green wood. But most of the time, I'd prefer using ceramic because it doesn't  wear much as the cool blocks.
