Walnut table, planning stages

Featured Replies

Seems I have some "Good wood' in the shop, for a change.ning-sdc14721-15036-66.jpg?width=750Black Walnut.    4/4 by 6" by 90" long.    Cut from the same log, no less.   I have three blanks cut from one of these planks.     about 30" long.     Might get a fourth one, if the top blank needs some more width.

Planed the edges, trying to get a good glue joint area readyning-sdc14724-15036-88.jpg?width=750A re-built DE6c did a lot of the work.    A smooth plane cleaned up afterwardsning-sdc14725-15036-21.jpg?width=750Stacked the three blanks to one side, along with some "secondary wood"ning-sdc14726-15036-72.jpg?width=750Secondary wood?   Oh yeah, got a few pieces of that as wellning-sdc14716-15036-60.jpg?width=750Look good on this face?ning-sdc14717-15036-85.jpg?width=750Some of those black marks are nails.   I also brought home another plankning-sdc14715-15036-28.jpg?width=750About a 1 x 10 by 48".    Maybe a dozen cut nails in it, and a nasty looking split.     Resawn into some braces?       Out of sight/out of mind?    I still have a few leftovers of oak sitting around, as well.     Thinking maybe a table out of Walnut, maybe some oak accents?

My version of "Sketchup"  is called "My Brain Cell".    Thats right, "Cell"!    it is about all that is left to work with on these things.

Trying to decide whether to face plane all the blanks for the top first, or glue it up and THEN face plane.  Don't have much of a "planer" in width.     But i think those #6 fore planes would work just as well.

There are a few knots lurking in the walnut, so that york pitch #3 will get it's chance at those.

Stay tuned, this might get to be fun....

Lew: the trick is to get them back off, before she sees them, LOL

Ok, got three blanks halfway planed smooth, and edge jointed.     Time for a glue up?ning-sdc14727-15042-12.jpg?width=721Hey, I said "Halfway "  right?    Ok, as for the ends, Brain Cell is saying something about a gentle curve being cut on the ends?    Will let this panel sit until tomorrow, then a little more work on it.    Right now, since it is "Breaktime" in the shop, most of the toys, er, tools are put awayning-sdc14728-15042-97.jpg?width=721Something about "Red Frogs"?     And, to think, there are two more Red ones upstairs....

I try to stay away from the washer and dryer as much as possible.

I love the walnut. Can't wait to see what you and the army of hand planes come up with.

Top is out of the clamps.   Face side is planed smooth.   Underside is a little worse for wear, thoughning-sdc14741-15040-87.jpg?width=721

All marked up, centerlines drawn everywhere.     That is a cut off sitting there.   Thin piece of plywood & three screws  set the  curves to be sawn off.    Not even sure what radius it is. Got three more planks to work over, as well.ning-sdc14743-15040-70.jpg?width=721Pretty, ain't they?    Aprons and other parts will come from these.    Might have enough for some legs, as well..

Walnut is 4/4 rough.    Getting it down to almost 3/4" thick, once I have things smoothed out.     Still need to get a few parts out of the three blanks that are left.

Trying to build a simple table, from just two planks.     Legs are going to be the hard part.

Have found a set of legs!   Old table is being thrown out.    Top was de-laminating, aprons were splitting.     Looks like a weathered walnut for the fancy legs.    need to reclaim them, and then copy the old apron's pattern.

Better Half has the cameroski, so, "Film @ 11:00 pm"
