I need Mitre Saw help.

Featured Replies

John Moody's Miter Saw thread, and my reply got me wondering.  I only use my miter saw for rough cutting for length.  I never pull a piece off it and expect it to meet at the angle I want it to be. I used to before the BANG.  Not anymore.

The bang was my fault.  I attempted to square the ends of a log to mount on to the lathe.  I felt a grab and then BANG.  After checking my fingers I determined the only damage was to my shorts.  I checked it today and here is what I found.

ning-sawfence-15016-80.jpg?width=750The fence is not flat.  I removed it from the saw and tried to flatten it by using a piece of PSA 100 grit sandpaper on a MDF board.  The result you see is about 1,000  strokes.  The Sharpie marks remaining are the low spots.

Do any of you have any suggestions on how to get this fence back in tune?

How about a 1/2" piece of straight hardwood as a backer board mounted to the fence?

It must be an optical illusion from the camera angle but it looks like the whole head is off square.  As for the fence, you may have to replace it of but a backer board on it as Harry suggested.

I haven't looked into replacement parts yet.  I hope I don't have to go that route.  I imagine parts availability for this saw will be rather slim.  The backer board may be my best option.  Rarely do I use the full capacity of the saw.

Ron, The head could very well be out of square.  I was cleaning sawdust from the crooks and crannies while I had the fence off.  It will square to the table and the fence.  However, when I place straight edge across the fence, there is at least 1/32 gap on the right side.  If I slide the straight edge from left to right, the straight edge drops off the left fence.  If I slide the straight edge from right to left, the straight edge catches on the tip of the left fence.

go with replacement parts

You torqued the  extruded aluminum and that material has a very crappy modulus of elasticity.  It's give has been given up.

You could try a filler material like JB weld and  then try to  lap that into shape but I think you will forever be making accommodations to the defects.

and this

I used to before the BANG.  Not anymore.

tells me that you prefer accuracy.

Hey~!! It's a hobby~!! It's not supposed to make sense.

After a quick check of the Internet, looks like that part is not available. Maybe a used on from Craig's List to cannibalize?
