Friday, April 5th, What's on Your Woodworking Agenda?

Featured Replies

It seems like today the time is just flying by. Maybe it is because I have so many things in the works and not enough hours in each day to accomplish them. I guess at times we are all in the same situation, right?

Well we have finished the first quarter of the new year, yes three months are now complete and feel like this year just got started.

I received my acceptance letter from Arts Alive Festival in Florence. This is a jury-ed show that will be in the middle of May. So now I have to get into full production mode on making items as the shows are about to be in full swing.

Speaking of swings, I got to work on number three that has been sitting ready for assembly just couldn't seem to get it to the work bench to work on it. So last night I got it laid out and most of the slats ready. It is just sitting there, nothing is attached yet as I have to pick up the SS bolts in the morning to get started.

ning-porchswing3-14796-1.jpg?width=750So I feel like I am making progress as it is now on the back bench. I should be able to finish it Saturday unless there are unseen disruptions that come along.

On my front work bench I am working on another Cedar Chest that needs to ship in the next week or so.

ning-cedarchestonworkbench-14796-75.jpg?So last night I got a new end panel glued up since two weeks ago I cut the tails for the dovetails in the wrong direction on one side. I will make sure of my marking this time, no more time to waste.

ning-cedarchestonworkbench2-14796-92.jpgSo this one is now on the Front Workbench which most of the time serves as my sanding bench. About the only flat surface left is my paint booth table.

Tonight we hope to get the First Friday shows off to a start. The one for March was snowed out and it has been raining here for a week now. It is suppose to clear out this morning and be in the 60's today so I am hoping for a good night to get my season started.

ning-christmas2012firstfridaybooth-14796So this was my booth at the show in December. Yea, it was warmer in December than it will be tonight. I have expanded into to booths this year so I will have 20' of booth space. I have two tents just in case I need to put everything under cover.

So that is what's happening in my shop, what do you have on your woodworking agenda this weekend? Are you doing a craft show, starting a new project, finishing up a project, readying the shop for the season, turning up the equipment watching a little March Madness, or being lazy and spending some time on some R&R? We here at TPW like to know what you are working on and to see the projects you are doing. Who knows, you might just inspire someone else to give it a try.

Come on and post those pictures of your projects, ask question and share with us what you are doing the first weekend in April.

That all looks sweet John! I can't wait to see the swing completed and the display of cutting boards look really nice.

I'm in the process of spring cleaning my entire shop. Last night I emptied out the dust collector and disassembled the Wynn filter from the collector and sealed several small leaks in the ring and plenum then reassembled everything. Today I'll be unloading a tall roll around storage cabinet, then cutting it in half to form two pedestals for a counter top with a downdraft carving station for my Foredom flex shaft power tool & a place for my disc & spindle sander.

EAGLES MAY SOAR BUT WEASELS DON'T GET SUCKED INTO JET ENGINES!

That swing is going to be really nice, John. Is it for you?

Here's hoping for good weather for your show and a great couple of sales days.

The oyster box is almost done. Put the BLO on it and applied the first coat of the final finish. Decided to go with rattle can poly. I need to make a shelf and install rails for it inside the box, add a couple more coats of poly, buff it and install the hinge.

Then, it's back to the gun case.

No the swing is not for me although I am going to have to build me one. I have four of them to make for two different customers.

John,

Will any of them be on frames or, do they all hang?

I think I have two more coats on a table to do.     First of those went on todayning-sdc14787-14804-90.jpg?width=721while I had the finish out, I coated a few handlesning-sdc14783-14804-16.jpg?width=721These were stripped of the old finish when they came to the shop.    Now they have a little bit better looking finish to them.

Planer? I'm the 'planer', and these are what I use...

That walnut has some really nice grain starting to come out. I love those Planes. You got them all looking great!

Well John, to paraphrase old Ben "(They) must all hang together, or assuredly (they) shall all hang separately. :-)

Professional looking set up, John. I can see why your stuff sells out so quickly!

Love that Cedar and feel your pain with the error in cutting. I think I've made more mistakes on this crib than any project in a long time. Hope it's just a phase and not something permanent!

Anyway, started the finish on the crib. Decided to use only clear finish and hoped the original patina would come back up. The planing/sanding seemed to eliminate more of it than I wanted.

This is the beginning application of Minwax semigloss clear poly. No sealer, no color added. I think the original color is coming back nicely.
