New stable addition

I have been on the look out for a good oscillating spindle sander for the past few years. I even, briefly considered a new shiny Chiwanese import but ultimately felt that it would be out of place with OWWM I have and I knew I would not be happy with a new machine. So, I have been patient and have waited for the right machine to come along that was in my bottom feeder budget. I have seen a few Max, State and a couple of other well made machines but they were all too expensive or too far away to make it reasonable. Well, my luck has changed and I found what appears to be a good one.

This sander was originally made by the Syracuse Sander Company and sold by Oliver. It is a good, heavy little machine that will fit perfectly in the 2 car garage shop. I just got notification that I won the auction and have made arrangements to have a fellow owwm'er pick it up and store for me for a month or so. I am really looking forward to getting a nice little sander and yet another restoration project completed.

Ron.....It was auctioned on Machinery Max. they are a small online auction house located here in the Peoples Republik. Luckily for me they are not too well known so the price was decent, not bottom feeder, but good non the less.

Congrats Ken ... Looks like a very nice sander. I love the looks of the Ducks Foot base.
Did they add a wood table on top of the round one, or is just a fence or something?

That looks sweat Ken! I love the design and heft!

It looks like they added a sacrificial top. Maybe to add additional height. I am really not sure yet as I still dont have it in my possession. Once I have it I will add more pics.

I finally have the sander home and its a little beat up. I wish I could have inspected before that auction, I would have probably passed. The main column has been repaired in a few places. It has been welded where it meets the foot, and the weld looks really bad, like someone was learning how to weld cast, and also at the top where the 90 degree elbow is. I am thinking it took a spill at some point in its life. I also think a few parts are missing that will allow the spindle to disengage the oscillation function, more research will be needed first. The motor sounds like crud, just turning by hand and I am not even gonna power it up until I take it apart. The one good point is the oscillation feature is operational. I can spin the spindle by hand and it turns smooth and quietly. The trunnion is also in good shape and ALL the teeth are present. It is still in the truck and I will try and get some pics added showing the condition soon.

Looking forward to seeing in at your place. I hope it doesn't turn out to be a disappointment. It looks like a really cool piece.

Ken,

I'm sure you'll work some magic, and it will be fine when you're done.
