Montgomery Ward Drill Press Rehab

Featured Replies

I just did some repair work on this press from my Uncle.  It needed a new drive pulley, belts, and re-wiring.

I re-wired with Jumpers from Motor to new gang / junction box, shortened the cord to remove cracked insulation, and installed a three-prong plug.

The pulley needed some elbow grease - made a puller when the 'easy' option didn't work.  The new pulley is smaller as i intend to run it on the second smallest arbor.

Hopefully the pictures will speak for themselves.

The link is to the post on my Facebook album where i have given more descriptions.

Enjoy!

Fr. Bob,

Your drillpress was made by Duro Metal Products Co. (Chicago Ill.) around 1950.

At first glance I thought it had a Walker-Turner motor. Kingston-Conley made Walker-Turners motors.

Nice drill press!!!

Fr. Bob,

Here's a link to the 1950 Montgomery Wards catalog, your drillpress is on page 14.

Very nice rebuild!  That was built when Craftsman was a premium name and it'll give you years of service.  I have an early 50's jointer and it cuts better than the new ones.

Thanks Ron!

I think i have some bearings to replace eventually and it would be swell to find the final driven pulley, but i will enjoy as is for many years.  It has a 4" stroke - a rarity these days.

Hi Larry!

To Think I could have had a complete mortising set up for about $16  oh to find a set now would be awesome!

My press does have an intermediary step pulley - not quite like what is listed.

I had looked for this catalog on Vintage Machinery - I wish they would have encouraged me to look at Duro-Kraft instead of just obliquely saying that the other two were connected with Mont. Wd.  Oh well.  Live and Learn.  However, the Model Number Plate does say "Montgomery Ward."

The center pulley is a slow speed attachment, it is used primarily for metal drilling.

Montgomery Wards was much like Sears, in that alot of companies supplied rebranded  machines for them.

If I remember correctly the quill on this press uses bronze bushings instead of ball bearings.

I'm into "old" Delta machines myself, and I get a kick out of the old catalog prices.

Don't be surprised at what can still be found for these old machines. Some accessory items have taken me years to find, but I have found them. ( Wish it was for the prices in the catalogs )

What is the old table saw in the back of your double shovel pulley puller photo?

The only reason i sold my Powrfraft one, was I could not keep a motor on it that would stay running.     It was a benchtop model though, but it did have 5 speed pulleys.     had trouble finding the right v-belt too.     Sold it to a friend  for $25.

Planer? I'm the 'planer', and these are what I use...

Hi Larry!

Thanks for the info!

My uncle bought it from a Car Mechanic when he sold out and my uncle has used it ever since and it did not look like he gave it a whole lot of TLC but that he frequently used it in the repair and maintence of his water well drilling operations.  The motor looks original.

You've got sharp eyes -the Table saw is another freebie - a real freebie.  Vintage 8" Atlas!  I will take a picture when the shop is better arranged!

I was going to venture a guess at it also being badged as a Powr-Kraft, made by Power King/Atlas Press Co.

Fr. Bob, don't arrange your shop too well.  It'll make the rest of us look bad. :)

Larry, loved the old wards catalog, used the retro order feature on my computer and ordered 500 bucks worth of tools, dident realize till afterwards that i have to wait 63 years for my tools to arrive in the present time and of corse by then it wont be the present time and I will be about 128 . but I sure got some good prices!

Tim,

I keep trying to borrow Lew's time travel machine to go back and get some of these goodies.

I'll have to try the retro order feature.

Replacement parts today cost more than the whole machine cost back when most of my machines were new.

Very cool looking drill press. Love the shape of the pulley guard.
