April 22, 201313 yr I am working on 2 shadow boxes for my military related items. The first one is designed to hold the various velcro backed aviation patches I've worn over the years. My goal was is to take advantage of the velcro backing and "stick" them to the shadow box backing. However, this is presenting a challenge. I quickly dismissed flocking as the velcro would not stick (on a test piece). Next I thought of the fuzzy pile that is made for velcro but it just does not look right and large amounts are more expensive than what I wanted to spend. Now I got a couple of yards of black felt but am not sure how to attach it. Would spray adhesive work without bleeding through?I'm worried that a spray adhesive will start letting go over time (though I admit, i have'nt used it much and not real familiar with how well it works). Any suggestions? Thanks,KevinKevin WellsChuckin' Woodwww.chuckinwood.com
April 22, 201313 yr I'm not sure whether your patches have the hook or the loop but you could try felt.Ron DudelstonSite AdministratorAbove and Beyond WoodWorks
April 22, 201313 yr The spray adhesive should be fine. I have used it in the back of some shadow boxes that were used to display golf clubs.
April 22, 201313 yr Kevin, could you purchase a small roll of the velcro material, cut it in small squares, glue it to the back of the case after you have applied the backing of choice, just glue the velcro to that, then stick your patch to it. I would be hesitant on adhering your patches permanently.
April 22, 201313 yr Kevin, I have used spray and brush-on adhesive to apply felt to wood. Â Both work without bleeding through the felt. Â I found that the spray is better (watch out for the over spray) because it can be applied more evenly. Â I've done this to my gun cabinets and Navy Charge Books. Â Even after 15 years, you can't see any trace glue and the red felt looks perfect in my gun cabinet. Â Hope this helps.
