April 29, 201313 yr Well dang it, I thought for sure I'd have a coat of finish on our walnut rocker by now, but it looks like life happened, kids, mama, and such. But we are ever so close to finally getting some liquid on this chair. You'll see in the following pictures how close to finish the chair looks using the sanding techniques we use. It's amazing to see the grain pop before any finish even touches the chair, you can imagine how the colors of the walnut are going to just come alive. But for now, I still have the legs, the rockers, and the underarms to finish sand. I sand through the grits from 80 for roughing out the final lines, all the way up through 800 then the final burnish with Abralon 1000 grit pad on my ROS. The burnishing is actually taking effect around the 500 grit time, but the gloss you see happens at the Abralon stage. I love this part of the chair making process, going over the entire chair with an ROS and Abralon and watching the wood come alive, it is just pure joy in the building stage. Thanks for looking folks, as I said the under arms are not done yet as the rockers and lower legs are not finished, they still need the 800 then the Abralon. I can't wait to get the wipe on oil finish on, it's going to look very cool I think. John Morris The Patriot Woodworker Proud Supporter of Homes For Our Troops and Wounded Warriors Project

April 29, 201313 yr Sam is smiling down from Heaven on you! Beautiful wood, Beautiful design/joinery. Walnut is my favorite wood to cobble thingies togather with. The next big Walnut project for me is going to be a Grandfather Clock for the Missus, I've already got the Wood picked out and drying. Any luck/thoughts about that Sam Maloof finishing system you see on woodworking sites?
April 29, 201313 yr I guess white paint is out of the question, then? :-)That is a seriously outstanding piece of work, John. Someone once said that walnut is the queen of American hardwoods. Your achievements with it certainly affirm that. Gene'The true soldier fights not because he hates what is in front of him, but because he loves what is behind him.' G. K. Chesterton

April 29, 201313 yr Author Rick , thank you very much for the kind remarks. The projects you are getting ready to undertake are going to be super fun!I have not tried the Sam Maloof finish. I'll have to read up on it and perhaps give it a try. I use BLO for the first coat then apply two or three coats of wipe on mix of 1/3 oil base varnish, 1/3 thinner, 1/3 BLO.Thanks again Rick.Rick Parks said:Sam is smiling down from Heaven on you! Beautiful wood, Beautiful design/joinery. Walnut is my favorite wood to cobble thingies togather with. The next big Walnut project for me is going to be a Grandfather Clock for the Missus, I've already got the Wood picked out and drying. Any luck/thoughts about that Sam Maloof finishing system you see on woodworking sites?John MorrisThe Patriot WoodworkerProud Supporter of Homes For Our Troops and Wounded Warriors Project
April 29, 201313 yr Author Thanks Gene, I love walnut, I didn't used to a few years back, but my appreciation has really grown for it recently. My next chair is almost half way done, it's made of Claro, you can see some of the parts for that chair on the TS and by the assembled chair on the work bench. It's in the roughing stage now. So I'll be getting back on the Claro Walnut Chair as soon as this one is finished. White paint! April 29, 201313 yr Author Claude, thank you so much sir, it's a fun project, with a few nail biter moments or it's firewood. The chairs have really taught me to plan ahead, execute, and become much closer to the wood then any other work I have ever done in my life. I love it. Thank you for the kind comments Claude.Claude Bradford said:Wow! That baby already looks amazing. Great wood, design and execution. April 30, 201313 yr John, allow yourself pause as you continue to bring this chair to fruition. Think of the past, the present, the future... Home. The warmth of hearth; family, security, comfort, safety. Stability, the remembrances of gatherings of yore; holidays, presents, a hearty meal around the supper table surrounded with family and friends. A quiescent moment of rocking and enjoying a book sitting next to a crackling fire. Home.An advert I wrote for one of my pieces a while ago.
