April 30, 201313 yr sometimes it don't.  Spent most of the last two days, just trying to get a plane to work right:Iron out of square?   reground it square, TWICE ( Strike ONE!)Frog moving around to the side, making a skewed cut?  Checked bolts, one was the wrong kind, replaced with the correct bolt and washers.   Loaded up the iron and tried again to get a decent shaving.......TILTED to the side, AGAIN!   ( striiiike TWO!)Reset both items, but the more I worked on it, the worse it got.   Got it to cut on the right side. Ok, adjust the iron ALL THE WAY to the other side.......not cutting at all.   Adjust depth of cut?   Back to square one, and cutting a narrow strip of shavings on the right side, again..... Steeeeerike THREE!So, a Union #5A is now sitting on Ebay, with a $16 + S&H price tag on it.    I am going to let someone ELSE try their luck with this PITA plane.  Will I miss it?   Not really, you see, I do have three #5 Jack planes ready for work, and two WILL cut a full, see through shaving in Oak.  Sometimes, it is just better to "Call the Ball" and move on....Planer? I'm the 'planer', and these are what I use...
April 30, 201313 yr I agree Steve, move on indeed! Sounds like just something inherent in the plane from day one that may have been there since the day it rolled off the line.John MorrisThe Patriot WoodworkerProud Supporter of Homes For Our Troops and Wounded Warriors Project
