May 7, 201313 yr Since a fancy-schmanzy Brand new in the box plane is on the way, time to find a worthy Test track.   Tried some PineBut the Millers falls #8 thought it was "too easy".  Well, there is that chunk of Black Cherry...But a "show-off" of a Sargent block plane seemed to think it easy, as well.   Ok, maybe some Barn Wood?   Had a chunk of Rafter, nail free, no less.  Not quite sure what wood it is.     Used the jack planes to "level" things out, nice and square.   Then a #4 sized Millers Falls went for a ridealong the edge grain.   Hmmm, might be something to use?    Slap a coat of BLO on it, just to show off the grain.Yep, I think it will do, just nicely.    WR #4, out of the box?    Will it work on this chunk of Barn Wood?? The plane in the background is a M-F #900 Bargain Brand plane, late 50s, and a cracked frog to boot. Planer? I'm the 'planer', and these are what I use...
May 7, 201313 yr Oh I am sure the WR will do just fine Steve, wait until you see the thick A2 blade in that sucker. The WoodRiver No. 4 weighed in at around 5 lbs before it went into the shipping box. Very thick body, thick everything, I'd swear it was an LN cept for the chip breaker which is not brass like the LN. It appeared to have a little protective oil on it, so be prepared to do some light cleaning, but other then that, should be good out of the box!!!! Looks like a solid performer, and it should be at your door today or tomorrow!Try it out of the box first before you do anything, I bet it will produce fine shavings without a honing.See Rob working a new WoodRiver Hand Plane.John MorrisThe Patriot WoodworkerProud Supporter of Homes For Our Troops and Wounded Warriors Project
