May 13, 201313 yr  Is not a happy one. The adjuster wheel was almost out of threads, and I was just getting paper thin shavings. Thought I could move the frog forward a bit, to allow some room on the threads.   All that happened was the iron closed the mouth up tight, and fouled easily.   Something wasn't right here.   My $7 Millers Falls planes were out doing this brand new plane?     Hmmm.   Checked the Cutter assemblySomething don't look right there.   Almost like the chip breaker is too short?  This is a Millers falls assembly.  Note the hole where the lever cap bolt comes through?   Lots of room. So, as an experiment, I switched out the assemblies.    The Millers Falls assembly dropped right into the WR, in fact, I had the run the wheel forward to about halfway point.  Had to use the M-F lever cap, as the M-F iron is thinner, the WR cap wouldn't lock down tight.   Test drivein a pine board, note the wheel?    Even worked well on some CherryYeah, yeah, kind of blurry.  Seems the chip breaker is behind all the troubles.     Maybe a word to Woodcraft?    Might even get the correct CB out of them??? Planer? I'm the 'planer', and these are what I use...

May 13, 201313 yr I surfed the net and tried to find anything negative about the WR No.4 and the issue you're having and have not found anything, I find only very positive reviews. If there is an issue I think it may be as you stated, the wrong chip breaker may have been shipped with the plane? If we don't get this plane working Steve I would like you to send it back to me, I'll pay shipping back here and I'd like to give it a once over as well. Of course that all depends if Woodcraft can get you and the plane to get along nicely tomorrow.Let's give it till noon tomorrow and see what their response is. Whatever happens, they will make it right, if it means spending time with you on the phone to learn ya the ins and outs of the bedrock style of planes and their adjustments, or to make the plane itself right, they'll be there for ya, great folks they are! Also, go to this link and see if any of the videos help. http://www.woodcraft.com/product/2021170/29725/woodriver-4-bench-hand-plane-v3.aspx#ProdInformationTabJohn MorrisThe Patriot WoodworkerProud Supporter of Homes For Our Troops and Wounded Warriors Project
May 13, 201313 yr Author Seems there was a review (or two) over on LJs.     Seems that Wood River knows about this issue with the Chipbreaker.     When contacted, they will sent out a replacement one of the correct size.  ps:  Went back to the WR's iron/cb, backed the chipbreaker back about 1/2" from the edge.   Installed on the M-F/Dunlap #4D BB bed.   Some chatter, but got see through shavings.  Yep, wrong chipbreaker, might be a V2?Planer? May 13, 201313 yr Author When that new one gets here, I WILL check things out on it.     Compare the two chipbreakers is at the top of the list.    If the only way it can be made to work is to slide it back 1/2" from the edge. means it is too short.    Like using a Sargent Chipbreaker, in a Stanley plane.  Main difference is in the distance between the mouth opening, and the slot for the adjuster cam.   Not all are made the same. Some even have two slots in themEven then, some don't quite fit right.  Planer? I'm the 'planer', and these are what I use... CB from a DE#6c
