May 14, 201313 yr We had a great time at the Let The Chips Fly Show and Contest. Please view some of the work that we saw, and it was all beautiful!!!!! These are high resolution images, so click on them to explode the wonderful detail!! Beautiful segmented bowls above. Our Native American heritage is alive and well in our area. Native American Papoose circa early 1900's on display. One of the vendors gave our kids some feathers and arrow heads made from cedar, great folks! Intarsia in the works! Our local high school made a good showing from their wood shop class! Some juniors and seniors had some great work. I don't know why they exhibited only and did not enter the contest. The following images are the entries in the contest, most were gone with their owners, they took them away Sunday morning after Saturday's judging so the images are few. But most of the entries were turnings and carvings, some beautiful work! Our Walnut Chair we entered! This photo above of the red tail hawk and following image of the same carving, was the First Place winner in it's category of carving and "Best of Show" overall to take home the grand prize of 1600 dollars! And man was it beautiful, the detail the artist put into this piece is incredible, and color and paint, it is life size and a joy to see. It rightfully so earned the highest honor of the show. That's it folks!!!! As some of you know our walnut chair took First Place Blue Ribbon in the furniture category! Well, we were the only furniture in the category! LOL, but hey, we'll take it. It was fun, and we got to meet some great folks. The organizer David Santos holds one of these local shows yearly, all proceeds from the table rentals, entry fees, and other dues outside folks paid, go to our local high school wood shop programs to help keep shop alive in our school system. It was an honor to contribute to this great cause, thank you David Santos!!!!!!! And thank you Patriot Woodworkers for coming along. May 14, 201313 yr John, Very nice show. It's good to see that there are still a few schools that have shop classes. Seeing the students work brought back some fond memories. The "brains" around here did away with shop classes years ago. Â Larry Old Woodworking Machinery Forum Host

May 15, 201313 yr Author It most certainly has John, turning is something I have been wanting to do for a couple years now in a bad way. I'll jump at that late when the time is right! It'll open up a whole new dimension to our furniture creations as well. John Moody said:Way to go John! Super! So did all those turnings increase the desire to start turning? May 16, 201313 yr Author Thanks guys, yes Ron, I did!!!!! With my ever growing waist line and throw a contest winning in with it, my buttons were shooting out at light speed! That is a pretty ribbon isn't it? You know, now that I think about it, I never did get a Second Place ribbon from them during their last show with my Cherry chair, I need to contact them and try to acquire that one for my display case that I have not built yet. Thanks again guys.John MorrisThe Patriot WoodworkerProud Supporter of Homes For Our Troops and Wounded Warriors Project
May 21, 201313 yr Industrial education ? Thank heaven it's not all gone. So many schools have abandoned the industrial arts entirely. There was a segmented bowl toward the end that caught my eye.Just when I get to thinking that I've seen as many segmented bowls as I can stand, I stumbled upon yet another that I think is really cool. I like the way that one swept the eye into the black hole in the center.  If it wasn't titled "Event Horizon" it could have been.
May 22, 201313 yr Better build it big, I think you have a continued winner there John Morris said:Thanks guys, yes Ron, I did!!!!!
