An Iraq War veteran permanently disabled in a 2008 attack will soon receive the keys to a Corona home that was custom-designed to accommodate his needs.

A ceremony is planned Saturday for U.S. Army Sgt. David Mayer, who lost both of his legs when his unit was attacked with roadside explosives detonated by Iraqi insurgents on March 14, 2008.

sgt-david-mayer.jpgMayer was on his second tour of duty, patrolling the area around Al-Hillah, just south of Baghdad, at the time.

Homes for Our Troops relies on corporate and individual donations to construct homes for service members severely injured in combat since Sept. 11, 2001.

According to the nonprofit organization, a single-story property at 1720 Liberty Drive in Corona was remodeled to facilitate Mayer in every way possible.

“This home will stabilize me so I can go to school and work and get on with my life,” the soldier said. “One of my biggest worries has been trying to locate accessible housing, and Homes for Our Troops is taking that worry away.”

The specially adapted home will be Mayer’s without his owing anything on the property up-front, according to Homes for Our Troops spokeswoman Jennifer Reed.

Friends, family and supporters of the serviceman will be on hand for the Saturday event, slated to begin at 11 a.m.

The Patriot Guard Riders, a volunteer group of motorcycle enthusiasts, most of them former military, will be honoring Mayer with a special salute.

Celebrants and the media will be invited to tour the property between noon and 1 p.m., according to organizers.

Tami and I enjoyed being there yesterday along with John Morris and his lovely wife and 3 kids. There was a good turn out with representatives from our city, county and state along with the folks from Homes For Our Troops. It was a real pleasure for me to be able to help with the framing of the house and hammering in some nails as well as getting a chance to sit and talk with David Mayer as he is a really nice guy. Seeing the home completed is really something! Everything in the house is high quality and allows full access for David who spends most of his time in his chair. The kitchen has cut outs for wheel chair use as well as everything reachable for him. The bathrooms have full access with the master bath with a full roll in shower and whirlpool therapeutic tub that he can get in and out of himself. The closets are designed with rods and shelves that he can reach easily and all the exterior doors are set up with power opening with the push a wall mounted button and they have battery back-ups on them so they function incase of a power outage. He has concrete around the entire perimeter of the house so he has full 360 degree access using his chair. The builders and contractors were all top notch and went  above and beyond to work with David to get this home to meet not only his needs but also his taste and style. If you ever get an opportunity to help out with a Homes For Our Troops project in your area, I highly encourage you to go and help out. You don't have to have any construction experience and this is something that the entire family can get involved with.

Here are a few pictures that my wife took yesterday at David Mayer's home.

David was brought in with an escort of "Patriot Guard Riders" on motorcycles while riding in a ladder truck from the Corona Fire Department. There was also local newspaper reporters as well as a camera crew from the local TV station who filmed the whole thing.

Wow Allen, Tami really got a good shot off of Sgt Mayer at the ribbon cutting! And others as well. I noticed she was jockying for position and getting in there which was quit a feat with all the folks there in the area we were in. Great job Tami!!!

It is a beautiful home indeed, fully accessible for David, the wide halls, oversize dining area and roll in showers etc. They even installed push button open close doors as you stated above Allen.

It was great seeing you and Tami there Allen, you guys look great!

Thanks for posting the photos Allen!

Amen Paul! Such a difference a generation makes when it comes to the treatment of our veterans returning home! Thanks to great organizations like Homes For Our Troops for the education and awareness they bring to the general public. Our citizenry is finally appreciating the sacrifices our men and women make while serving our country.
