May 24, 201313 yr Today my beautiful and most wonderful wife took off just to get out. After we got out of town we stopped to eat lunch and decide to go to this antique store when we finished. some very nice antiques we in the store like this Shaker Chest. but upon walking arounf further i walk into another room and found something I wasn't expecting. A room full of old tools. hsnging on the wall are several wooden levels. right in thr middle is a black Starrett metal level. Several hand saws, spoke shaves and other tools. then there were all these hammers, chisels, squares and screw drivers. but wait it gets lots better. A display case with several Stanley block planes. The metal one the forth from the left was priced 245.00. The one by the silver flashlight was just over $400.00. There was a Starrett plumb bob and a Stanley 110 with the original box and original purchase invoice. But wait there is more... These shelves all had Hand Planes. Stanley, Kleene Kut and Winchester, Several No.9's and a buch of wooden molding planes. There was a Stanley No.9 with Aluminum handle. Well you know I couldn't find all of this and just walk away. My wife went on to look around and left me alone in this room. They were all calling out to me to take them home with me. I finally gave in and picked up this Stanley Bailey No.4 in the original Box. It had a bit more rust on it than the No.9 I got the other day. The know has a few scratches but no cracks. The handle or Tote was also in very good shape. A little more rust on the sides but not real bad. will clean up for sure. The bottom was good and the mouth didn't have any chips. So I couldn't help myself it had to leave with me. This therapy shopping is a lot of fun and sure makes my arm feel better. Oh and yes my bride found a couple of treasures also, just not from the room I was in. Yep, I will be making another trip back to this special place. I will need lots more therapy! John MoodySite AdministratorJohn Moody Woodworkshttp://www.johnmoodywoodworks.com
May 24, 201313 yr Nice score!!We have a "Rehab Store" like that near here. I'm not permitted to go there!!Lew Kauffman-Wood Turners Forum HostTime traveler. Purveyor of the world's finest custom rolling pins!
May 24, 201313 yr Good looking old Stanley. Great find. It's wonderful that your plane still has the box. It's amazing to me that people keep original boxes for their tools. It's even more amazing that those boxes survived this many years.Gene'The true soldier fights not because he hates what is in front of him, but because he loves what is behind him.' G. K. Chesterton
May 24, 201313 yr Author I'm hoping she lets me go back Lew. She even found a few treasures so I think she wants to go back..John MoodySite AdministratorJohn Moody Woodworkshttp://www.johnmoodywoodworks.com
May 24, 201313 yr Author I know Gene. I'm not real good at it. I think about it and then look and realize I don't have room to save boxes. When I dad passed away last year I found a craftsman router he bought still in the box with the receipt stuck in the corner of the box from 1979. Gene Howe said:Good looking old Stanley. Great find. May 24, 201313 yr Author No, I would have loved to, it was on sale for 2850.00 marked down from 3395.00. My wife loves dishes. She found some she had been looking for. It wasn't a complete set but nine pieces for 14.00. She also found a very nice McCoy vase for 15.00. John MoodySite AdministratorJohn Moody Woodworkshttp://www.johnmoodywoodworks.com
May 24, 201313 yr WHew!!!! So I am assuming it was a Shaker original? Not a shaker style built by a manufacturer of shaker? I appreciate the historical significance of such a wonderful piece, but that is a bit steep in my humble opinion.John Moody said:No, I would have loved to, it was on sale for 2850.00 marked down from 3395.00. May 24, 201313 yr Author I believe so. The lady at the store was going to call the owner and find out where they got it but I told her not to bother them. If I had been serious I would have. Look at the width of the boards on the front. The back also was solid pieces. I should have taken more pictures but in the brace it is hard to get pictures with one hand. The drawer had hand cut dovetails. I didn't get to open the top since it had items sitting on it. The bed sitting behind it was what kept me from getting a shot from the back.John MoodySite AdministratorJohn Moody Woodworkshttp://www.johnmoodywoodworks.com
