May 24, 201313 yr GOOD morning Patriots!Yesterday was very productive. I was able to get 3/4 of the gun cabinet trim milled and installed. One more piece to cobble up (don’t have the correct router bits…gotta improvise) and I can start on the drawers. They'll be box jointed BB with solid overly fronts. And, finally the long gun rack and other interior pieces. Got an estimate for the 3/16†Lexan for the doors. $300!!!! With all the hardware, solid wood, plywood, felt and other misc., this thing is going to cost well over $700. Since it’s a gift for our son, no expense records were kept. I don't really want to know, anyway.I “needed†:-) several new small tools and an HVLP set up to complete the project. And since it’s for family, not too many objections were endured. (She doesn't know about the HVLP set up yet, though)Around 6 PM, last night, FEDEX delivered 5 packages of a new to me Shopsmith. It will stay in the boxes until the gun cabinet is done. Added incentive….as if the gun cabinet recipient’s return from Okinawa in July wasn't enough. Time for breakfast. Gene 'The true soldier fights not because he hates what is in front of him, but because he loves what is behind him.' May 24, 201313 yr Wow sounds like you are making good progress and picking up a few goodies along the way. We need to hear about the HVLP system. When you can without revealing any secrets give us a review. But don't let that hold you back I know you want to finish so you can open those boxes. May 24, 201313 yr Author John,The HVLP set up hasn't gotten here yet. But, it's this one .I'll review it after I use it for the first time. It won't be a secret by then. She pays the CC bill. :-)I have a gravity feed HVLP gun that uses the compressor, but the one I ordered seems much more user friendly. Especially inside cabinets. If anybody needs or wants the gravity feed gun, it's yours.Gene'The true soldier fights not because he hates what is in front of him, but because he loves what is behind him.' May 24, 201313 yr Author John,Don't even mention the time it's taking me. :-) I literally have to think through two or three steps ahead before committing to a cut. That's the price paid for deviating from a crappy set of plans, I guess. Just finished the last of the molding today. Used three different router bits for ONE PIECE!  Now I know why Norm had so many routers. He'd just load them up with the bits he needed and have them at the ready. As per the plans, I installed the face frame, leaving it about 5/32 proud of the case sides. I never gave it a thought when I was gluing it up. I'd always left a skosh for trimming kitchen cabs to fit, so it just seemed natural. You can imagine the frustrated cussing going on when I tried to wrap the dentil molding around the case and top of the face frame. Couldn't get the miters to close at the corners. (Gee, I wonder why!) Tomorrow, I'll break out the router AGAIN and trim that 5/32 even with the case surface. It's looking pretty good, though. I'll get some pics after the dentil molding is installed. Tomorrow.....maybe. Gene'The true soldier fights not because he hates what is in front of him, but because he loves what is behind him.' G. May 25, 201313 yr Author The wife was in the shop helping to hold trim pieces in place for measuring, gluing etc. With her help, 2/3 of the trim was installed and fits darned good. I thought I'd have some pictures today but, wifey tripped and fell, knocking down some 6X6s and landed on the knee that was replaced in '09. Not flat on the floor, though. Her knee came down on a corner of a 6X6...OUCH!  So, we've been nursing the knee with frozen peas. She's gonna have a bruise, for sure.We quit for today. Maybe pics tomorrow. Gene'The true soldier fights not because he hates what is in front of him, but because he loves what is behind him.' G. K. Chesterton

May 26, 201313 yr Author Here are two pics of the unfinished case. Doors and drawer fronts are made. There will be a drop down door with lexan over the slanted part of the base. Two drawers go under it. Gene'The true soldier fights not because he hates what is in front of him, but because he loves what is behind him.' G. K. Chesterton
May 27, 201313 yr Gene, it's absolutely beautiful! Very nice work sir!!!!! And I am sure sorry about your wifes fall! Not good!!!Is the case ply or solid wood?John MorrisThe Patriot WoodworkerProud Supporter of Homes For Our Troops and Wounded Warriors Project
May 27, 201313 yr Author John, Thanks for the kind words. Phyllis has a bruise and a slight swelling. She walks 3 miles a day and didn't miss a day! Good German stock!!! The cases are 3/4 oak ply. The top case edges are covered with 3/4 face framing. The bottom case edges are covered with 3/4X1/4 strips. Not shown are the doors and drawer faces, all 3/4 oak. Outside edges are routed with a "Classic Ogee" bit. Doors are joined with M&T. A departure for me. Gene'The true soldier fights not because he hates what is in front of him, but because he loves what is behind him.' G. K. Chesterton
May 27, 201313 yr That is Gorgeous, Gene!Sorry to hear about the Mrs. Glad she is recovering with no damage to the knee replacement. You'll probably have to be extra nice to her so she will return to the shop as a helper.Lew Kauffman-Wood Turners Forum HostTime traveler. Purveyor of the world's finest custom rolling pins!
May 30, 201313 yr Author Thanks Lew,Glad to report that Phyl has no lasting effects from her little trip. Swelling a bruising has gone. Knee seems to be good as new.Got to use the new I Box yesterday. It only took me 3 hours to set it up correctly. The joys of a Shopsmith! And, the agony of being as mechanically inclined as an aardvark. The drawers are 26WX16D and made from BB. Once set up, the I Box is a pure delight to use. In less than an hour both drawers were cut, box jointed and dadoed for the bottoms. Assembly time and fitting to the glides today. Might even get around to fitting the false fronts. The HVLP sprayer arrived today. I'll review it after it's first use. Probably in a couple weeks. (Fingers crossed)Gene'The true soldier fights not because he hates what is in front of him, but because he loves what is behind him.' G. K. Chesterton

May 31, 201313 yr NICE~!! Love the dental work.Good for the missus. People I know who had joint replacement ended up very happy about it.
May 31, 201313 yr Author Thanks, Cliff. The wife was in an auto accident that caused her to need the new knee. The after surgery process was a drag, but she persevered like the trooper she is and hasn't had a bit of trouble with it since. Now if I could just convince her to wear decent footwear when she's in the shop!Ron, I'll take that advice! Gene'The true soldier fights not because he hates what is in front of him, but because he loves what is behind him.'
