May 31, 201313 yr Well Steve Newman got me to looking at these every time I walk into a store now. I was looking around yesterday and saw a box sitting in the corner of a antique store. In it was this Sargent Hercules and a Craftsman block plane. The guy in the store told me he would take 10.00 for anything in the box. I decided to get the bench plane actually to use as eye candy when I setup my booth at craft shows. I was going to just clean it up and put it out on the table as a prop. I looked while I was in the store and it was so rusted I couldn't see any name on it and nothing other than "Made in USA". Went on and got it and decided to see if I could find a name on the top of the cutter iron. As you can see it is hard to tell if there was anything on the there. So I took the wire brush to it. and sure enough there was a name on it. So I decided to go ahead and give it a cleaning. The side and bottom had some rust on it. Enough you could tell if there was anything etched on the sides. The tote was in good shape as far as no breaks or cracks. It does have some paint specks on it and a few small scratches The knob is in a little worse shape. It will take a bit of sanding to clear it up but that will be for another day. So after a quick brushing of the top of the cutter I could see what kind of plane it was. So I went on and gave the rest of it a good brushing with the wire brush and then a buffing on the buffing wheel with a diamond compound. Wiped down the base and the japanning was in pretty good shape so I decided to leave it. The sides and bottom cleaned up good. Again I will have to wait a bit about lapping the bottom but I think it might make a fairly nice plane. I found the model number cast under the frog. So I believe this one will look nice as eye candy when I setup my craft show display and it might even get to see a little action in the shop. The blade will need a good sharping also so for now it will just be a show piece. John MoodySite AdministratorJohn Moody Woodworkshttp://www.johnmoodywoodworks.com

June 1, 201313 yr Called a Wards Master Quality.      Needs a new blade.    Had spent too much on a set of Kitchen knives ($5) only to be told they were $3.    Cool, got a dollar change, AND that hacksaw!Worth #4 will need a little bit of work.   The Buck Brothers #4 was "New in Box".     Between the two planes, spent a whopping $11! Once the BB#4 was put together right, I got some very nice shavings out of it.  There was even a set of instructions in the box.  Guess nobody read them....Planer? I'm the 'planer', and these are what I use...
