June 2, 201313 yr  Went out to get two used tires for the van.    $85 down the tubes.    Needed to kill some time before they were ready to install the tires, so i went on a small rust hunt. Stopped at one place, and bought a set of kitchen knives, for $5.   On the way out to the van, saw a hacksaw laying there.  Hmmm, just a $1? Took the hacksaw back inside to pay for it...."Price on the set of knives was wrong, should have been only $3"    Ok, I'll take a dollar bill and this hacksaw.... Next place seemed to be more of the old ladie's kind of stuff. Looked a little closer at a box on the back of the table... a "New-in-the-Box" Buck Brothers #4.   price was marked as $10.  "What will you take for this?"   "Oh, seven, maybe?"  "SOLD!" Stopped at the old thrift shop on the way back to the tire store.     He had gone out and bought a plane! Sooooo, I guess i had to buy it from him.    "How much?"   $4, firm..      The only one I couldn't cut a deal with, the whole day.  Got the tires on, had to go to Wallie-world, as the Boss wanted to get a few things. A "few things" usually means at least an hour in there.    Kept watching the clouds outside......Nasty dark blue ones, and HUGE, too. "Time to head home!"    Got the gas tank filled up, and got wet doing it.  40 LONG miles back home.  Lightning, thunder, could see maybe 1/4 of a mile, rain coming down in waves ( not sheets) with a LOT of wind.  Had to pull over for awhile, dime sized hail!    Wipers were making slushees with each pass. Got the stuff home, and waited for the "LIquid Sunshine" to leave.   I had treasures to check out!The NIB plane. Behind ita Wards Master Quality hacksaw.  And that $4 no-name plane.   Stamped steel frog AND lever cap.  Seems to be a #4 sized plane.....PEXTO???? Fiddled around with the two planes, both irons neede some work.    Buck Brother irons are quite good, once you get them flat across the back, that is.   Finally had to grind it flat, BIG hollow back there!   "Pexto" iron wasn't that bad.  Sole on it was bad, but fixable.   Sides were bad, and would need a mill to smooth out.   Not on a $4 plane..  Got things all aligned back up, and then the test drives, on pineHmmm, need just atouch more work?Just a bit better.  As for the $4 plane?Edge has a small nick in there, somewhere.   Like the "Bottle-cap"? Those sides are as rough as they look.  It was never smooth from the factory ( unless it hatched under a rock, somewhere) I like the knob, but not the tote.   It does look a little better than the other's, though.  As for the hacksaw?   Cleaned it up, found the "Wards" etch along the top rail.   Handle is an Amber like plastic, with sawnuts. Will need a new blade, not a biggie, I thinkI might have one around the shop... Just killing time, waiting on tires.     Should have been looking for an Ark, instead... Planer? I'm the 'planer', and these are what I use...
June 3, 201313 yr Author Still have to replace the hacksaw blade.   Trying both planes on fleebay, for now.    IF they don't sell, we'll see what can be done to "ReFurb" them to my standards.  Planer? I'm the 'planer', and these are what I use...
