A lot of those distinctions are more about where you are when you utter the word.


Take the Aussies, who are clinging on to the archaic form of while by saying  whilst.


darn them upside down Aussies~!!


Just don't:


use the word utilize when the word use  would serve.   The word  utilize means put to a purpose for which the thing was not intended.


And then there is  another peeve of mine: Professional.  The 1960s,  a pandemic insecurity about one's self identity, and  Howard Cosell ( yeah; gotta drag Cosell into this)  began the long  and ugly bastardization of that word  and  the unwise abandonment of perfectly good words like vocation and  avocation.


Profession merely means  that one has  professed to a higher calling and  means not one thing more.
