June 5, 201313 yr  A Wards Master Quality#3 ! Missing a bolt to hold the iron and chipbreaker together.    Seemed it was this way awhile, as the top edge of the iron is pretty well beat up.    Someone used a hammer to "adjust" it.This one will take a bit to refurb..Starting with that ugly knob!  Found a bolt, from a Dunlap plane.    I do have a bolt on the way, in a bag of parts.   My Dunlap #3 will be getting a make-over later this week.   As for this wards planeA lack of anything Brass, that adjuster wheel being Plastic, and the handle bolts being just.....bolts, point this to the WWII era.   Might be a Sargent made plane?  I got a few bolts and such already wire brushed clean.    Just starting to sharpen the iron up.   Seems to be a decent enough plane.Sides need some work, but the base's sole looks good!    Casting is a thick one, too.    Wasn't any bolt to adjust the frog back and forth, like on a stanley made plane. Planer? I'm the 'planer', and these are what I use...
June 5, 201313 yr Author This is a #3 sized plane. Iron is just 1-3/4" wide.    If it weren't for the heavy casting of the base, this would be a nice, light weight smooth plane.  Iron's back is now flat.   Edge is just a hair out of square, but I think I can live with that.   Got the stones out, and the rest of the sharpening stuff.   Might cue up the belt sander for a bit.    Mainly to clean up the sides.   As for those handles,,,, seems to be a very dark stained hard wood.    Seen the bare wood through a hole in the bottom of the knob, very light in colour......Beech maybe?Planer? I'm the 'planer', and these are what I use...
June 6, 201313 yr Here you go again Steve. Was there a number cast under the frog? On some of the Sargent planes the number was cast on the bottom of the frog, but you already know that.Look forward to seeing you work the magic on it.John MoodySite AdministratorJohn Moody Woodworkshttp://www.johnmoodywoodworks.com
June 6, 201313 yr Author Ok, after an hour or so ( LOL) tried it out on some PineThe only thing on the frog was a letter "U".   Another view?Still haven't decided about a re-finish for the handles.   These types of old finishes are a ROYAL BEAR to remove.    iron is now square and scary sharp, I think.   Sides have been cleaned up, and a little was done to the sole.  Seems to be a "good" one.... Planer? I'm the 'planer', and these are what I use...
