As for cleaning up a handle?   Wire brush (Brass one) in the Drill Press, and you can do it with one hand.   Work towards the finished areas you want to strip.   Otherwise, the brush just drags the gunk across the bare wood.  Wear an old t-shirt, as this gets very messy, with the old finish flying around.
