Off the beaten path - Wall Art

Featured Replies

I have been experimenting with some wall art.  I found two used canvases at the Goodwill each one was 12" X 48".

Randomly Wooden:

First I painted the canvas for a background color.  Cut the wood to the width of the canvas with a chop saw, and glued on various types of wood with different thicknesses using wood glue.  Used painter's tape to hold the wood firmly onto the canvas until dry. Wood was left natural - no finish.

The Drifter:

Painted the canvas.  Cut driftwood I had collected at the beach into 1/4 inch pieces on the band saw.  A few pieces were cut just a bit thicker for added texture.  Next sanitized the pieces in water and bleach for 24 hours. Rinsed and allowed pieces to dry.  Once dry, glued pieces in place using wood glue.   Driftwood was left natural - no finish.

Thanks for looking.  These were great fun to create.   Comments would be appreciated.

Sue, those look awesome!!! I love em. Up close they look like, well, just a bunch of wood stuck together, but when you panned back with pictures and showed them in the context of a wall or home, it's a completely different experience!!! They look custom, cook, and fashionable, I would love to have them in our home! You may be on to something here lady!

Very nice Sue.  I'm not an artsy kinda guy but I like those.

My artistic ability is limited to drawing flies, but, I think these are fabulous!!

Thanks everyone for all the kind words.   I almost didn't post these but figured creating them brought me much joy, why not?

My husband likes to tease me and tell everyone our home is my private art gallery.  Little does he know there are still more walls yet to be conquered. :)

I like the Sue. Especially the one of the round cut offs, As for more walls to conquer, have fun and enjoy.

Wayne, thank you.  The fact that driftwood is free for the picking is just an added bonus. :)

Very neat! Now why can't I ever think of something cool like that?

It is so perfect for a Woodworker.

John,

Thank you.  I think the many talented folks on this forum will agree, wood is magical especially in it's rawest form.  :)

Gene,

Thank you.  You are very kind.  I think it's more persistence than talent.  I refuse to give up - even when I should.  :)

I have decided on my next piece of wall art.  The plan I have in mind (if I don't deviate from this plan) consists of 576 pieces of wood.  :)  I'm getting really close to cutting my first pieces.
